SMARTCAT 26.10.

2020
THE NEW PLAYER ON THE MARKET
• No shortage of computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools in the
market today:

- SDL Trados is still viewed as one of the most well-known tools.

- Other familiar names are Wordfast (1999), OmegaT (2002)
memoQ (2004), and MateCAT (2011-2014, project-based, EC).
- A new player on the market is Smartcat, announced in 2014 by
Russia-based ABBYY Language Services. In 2016 it became a
separate company.

“LIFE JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT EASIER FOR
FREELANCE TRANSLATORS”
Smartcat has included the most useful tools and combined
them with a marketplace for freelance translators:
‐ all sentences are saved and matched with new translation
projects;
‐ there’s no need to translate similar phrases over and over
again;
‐ a glossary can be created to make sure that the key terms
are translated in a consistent way.
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW
All these ideas are not new and have already been
implemented in other CAT tools like the de‐facto industry
standard SDL Trados.

The new thing Smartcat has done is the introduction of a

freelance translation marketplace, which simply eliminates
the need for clients to work with an agency.
CORE IDEA: CONNECTED TRANSLATION
The 21st‐century customer wants a simplified workflow.
They want collaboration made easy.
They want immediate access to translators and editors.
They want the ability to hire freelancers, keep an eye on job progress and pay them
in one place, at the touch of a few buttons.

In a nutshell, this is connected translation.
CONNECTED TRANSLATION
Human translation
powered by up‐to‐date
features such as:

 Translation memories
 Glossaries
 QA checks

SOME FUNCTIONS
Users have access to:

 a free CAT editor,

 translation memories,
 glossaries,
 QA checks.

Smartcat is free to use.

Translators can bring to Smartcat the things they already have created in
other CAT tools:

• From SDL Studio Trados: projects and translation memories.

• From MemoQ: projects and translation memories.
• Glossaries from Excel spreadsheets (make a habit of creating bilingual
glossaries in Excel).
FILE FORMAT
Translators can upload files of various formats to SmartCAT
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
The text is split into segments automatically.
Sometimes you need to join or split them.
To merge segments, use
Ctrl+Shift+J
Another option: select the two segments and press the
symbol, as in the next image.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
For the reverse operation:
Ctrl+Shift+S
Then the segment will be split into parts.
---
In some cases, there’ll be TAGS.
The Tags shall be copied in the target language text, because they refer to the format of
the original text (spaces, hyphens, etc.). They cannot be disabled.
If they exist in the ST, but you don’t shift them to the TT, Smartcat will warn you of an error.
Correct everything, otherwise the tool will not allow you to confirm the translated segment
and when you download the translation, that part which included tags, will not be
translated.
TAGS
To enclose text into paired tags, select a word or a phrase and
press Alt plus the tag number: Alt+1, Alt+2, etc.

projects.
TM
- Once the project is created, Smartcat sets up translation memories
automatically.
- If you have not yet created any translation memories in the system,
a new TM will be created (it will have the same name as the
project).
- If you have already uploaded a TMX file to a project, the system
will create a translation memory using this file, and enable it on the
project.
- To create a TM and enable it on a project, press the Create new
TM menu (with name, languages, client). Press Save at the end.
GLOSSARY
Glossaries = terminology bases or term bases
are structured dictionaries of terms with their translations into one or more
languages.
allow translators to keep their terminology consistent across the content.

Terms can be added into glossaries either on the glossary page or directly in
the Editor.
By adding terms to a glossary, you eliminate the need to look up their
translation again.
Translators create separate glossaries for different clients and topics.
QA - the system checks the translation of each segment, and if it finds that the translation of a term
does not match the glossary, it will warn you of an error.
