I. Performance Objectives
Objectives
The students will be able to...
● Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
● Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
Materials
● Whiteboards
● Whiteboard markers
● Roll and Read worksheet.
● Crayons.
● dice.
Introduction.
● The teacher will say, “ Which letters say /k/?” Allow for wait time for student response.
The students should respond with the letters C and K.
● “Both the letters C and K do make the /k/ sound, but the letters CK also make the /k/
sound. “ The teacher will show ck together on one ‘tile’ on a slide show. Having them on
one tile can show that ck go together to make one sound. There will be a slide with the
letters c, k, and ck and showing that they all represent the /k/ sound. The letters ck are
glued together. When you see ck together like this and you sound it out, it does not sound
like /k/ /k/. It simply says /k/. I like to remember it by saying ck sock /k/. Say that with
me.” The students and teacher will both say ck sock /k/.”
● The teacher will say to the students, “There are times when we are supposed to use c,
times when we are supposed to use k, and times when we are supposed to use ck. Today
we are going to focus on which letters to use when we hear /k/ at the end of words.”
● The teacher will move the letter C over to the side and say, “It is very rare that we use
just the letter c at the end of words. That leaves us with the letters k and ck.”
● The teacher will say “When we hear our vowel with the short sounds, /a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ u// we
use the letters ck to represent our /k/ sound.”
● The teacher will play a ck video introducing the /k/ sound with ck.

● Transition into segmenting and building words.
Development
● The teacher and students will say, segment and build several works that end with the /k/
sound.
● The teacher will say “ Let’s build the word ‘duck’. Let’s all say the word together.” The
teacher and student will say “Duck. Now lets spell the word in the air with our fingers.
Lets sound the word duck out. /d/ /u/ /k/. Now let’s build the word together.” The teacher
will have the letters on the slide show, and allow the students to guide building the word
duck. Once we get to the /k/ sound the teacher will stop and drag the letters k and ck
under the word.
● “Now that we did the word duck together, let's see if you can build these next few words.
With your whiteboard I would like to see if you can build the word luck. Remember we
say it, chop it, and write it. When I say it’s time, hold your whiteboard up. After all the
short u sounds are read the teacher will say. “Now we are going to change our vowel
sound. Lets spell the word lack.”
○ yuck, luck, lack, sack, pack, rack, sick, kick, deck, peck, sock, rock, clock. Follow
the same steps as above for each word.
Closure
● The teacher will pass out a roll and read for the final ck sound. The roll and read was
made on google slides and can be printed out. The teacher will say “There is a roll and
read being passed out. You roll the dice and whatever number you land on you read that
word. Then you color in the word you read. Keep playing until you can’t read any more
words!”
● The teacher will pull the students attention back to the screen by saying 123 eyes on me.
● The teacher will say “So when you are reading and you come across a word with ck in it.
Ck are glued together and they make the /k/ sound. Ck, sock, /k/. “
