Points (PLPs) for body components and assemblies.

1
:0
1.2 Coverage of this Standard

11
This standard applies to PLP selection and documentation for all body-in-white sheet metal assemblies.

9
This standard does not address the classification, selection, or documentation of datums, which are used

01
for measurement and inspection.

,2

5 GENERAL
The purpose of PLP features of size (e.g. a hole) or PLP surfaces is to properly position a component,

AM
sub-assembly, or complete body for assembly or repair.

PLPs are classified as one of two types: Primary (see section 6.1 and 6.2) and Secondary (see section

1
:0
6.3). Furthermore, there are unique requirements for the Primary datums for the complete body (see

11
section 6.1).

9
Primary and Secondary PLPs are used for tooling. Fundamental and supplementary datums are used for

01
measurement (see CS.00019 section 6). Whenever possible, datums and PLPs should be coordinated

,2
and should be the same geometric features.

30
When choosing a four-way (or more important) locator, preference should be given to the PLP that is:

y
ar
- On the left side

nu
- The lowest
- Closest to the front of the vehicle

Ja
on
Standard CS.00020 defines the sizes and size tolerances of PLP holes. PLP holes must be class R or
om

CR and may be round, slotted, or square. At the beginning of a new vehicle project, the manufacturing
team will define if Class R or Class CR PLP holes will be used, on new assemblies class CR can be used
.c

only after agreement with manufacturing according to the plant location.

up

See section 7.0 for PLP feature of size quality and design requirements.
ro
ag

If it is not possible to use round holes and slots to locate a component or assembly, see section 6.1.2 and
fc

section 6.2.2 of this standard for surface PLP requirements.

t h.

Within the limits allowed by the part geometry, the center of each PLP should be located so that at least
au

two of the three coordinates are an integer.

@
1A

6 PLP CLASSIFICATION
23
55

In accordance with the releasing process defined in Fiat standard 07249 and the Fiat drafting standard
07272, engineering will release a PLP roadmap as a part of each assembly drawing. This roadmap will
W

precede assembly tooling design, must be developed in collaboration with the manufacturing team and
by

must be approved by the appropriate process engineer.

6.1 Primary PLPs for Complete Body

AM
There must be five Primary PLPs for the complete body. These PLPs are holes and surfaces on the

1
bottom of the body. Three are located at the front of the vehicle and two at the back.

:0
11
These PLPs are defined relative to the three dimensional global axis system of the vehicle. See FCA
standard CS.00080 section 6.1 for information regarding the vehicle axis system.

9
01
These PLPs are defined by engineering in collaboration with manufacturing and manufacturing quality.

,2
30
Primary PLPs for the complete body should meet the following requirements:

y
ar
- Body complete PLPs should be PLPs for the component to which they belong.
- There shall be no welding or weld distortion on surfaces or features specified as PLPs.

nu
- Each PLP surface should support, without deformation, 2/3 of the weight of the complete body

Ja
- A flatness tolerance of 0.2 mm applies to the surface within an 8 mm zone (when permitted by the
component shape) around each Primary PLP for Complete Body. See FIGURE 1

6.1.2 Surface PLPs

The surfaces used for Primary PLPs for the complete body should meet the following requirements:

AM
- The surface should be flat and horizontal.

1
- The flatness tolerance for the PLP surface should be 0.2 mm.

:0
2
- The area must be not less than 1100 mm (approx 35 mm x 35 mm)

edges or radii. See FIGURE 4.

6.2 Primary PLPs

au
@

Primary PLPs properly position a component or sub-assembly for welding or assembly operations. These
1A

PLPs can be a combination of features of size and surfaces.

23

Primary PLPs should meet the following requirements:

55
W

- PLPs must allow transfer of components or assemblies from one production operation to the next.
- PLPs should be coordinated as much as possible with downstream assembly operations.
by

- Each PLP should be maintained in subsequent assembly operations as long as it is technically

useful to do so.

6.2.2 Surface PLPs

Sheet metal surface PLPs should be flat surfaces or straight hem or trim edges. The flatness (or form

tolerance in cases where a flat surface cannot be used) shall be 0.2 mm.

1
Surface PLPs should be 20 mm x 20 mm, 20 mm x 16 mm, or 20 mm x 12 mm when possible. PLPs

which are smaller than 16 mm x 16 mm must be approved by the manufacturing team.

6.3 Secondary PLPs

Secondary PLPs when possible are coordinated with supplementary datums and are used when

additional constraint is required during the assembly process.

Secondary PLPs are essential for large components or sub-assemblies that are easily deformable.

If for technical reasons it is necessary to introduce an uncoordinated PLP to a sub-assembly, and the

PLP is not used for any of the component parts, the uncoordinated PLP will be associated with the sub-

7 Quality and Design Requirements

ag
fc

The quality and design requirements in this section apply to all types of PLP features of size: Primary or
h.

Secondary, round, slotted, or square.

t
au

Features of size which are specified as PLPs must be free of defects as required by FCA standard
@

9.50207, section 2.3 (Visual inspection).

1A

To facilitate a stress-free build, the PLPs of a component or assembly should not be two round holes, but
23

should be a hole and slot or hole and square hole.

55
W

For all sheet metal parts, unless limited by aesthetic constraints, PLP holes should be punched at 90°±1°
with respect to the surface and lie on a plane parallel to the principle vehicle planes (X, Y, or Z). Any
by

exceptions or violations to this requirement must be agreed upon between the engineering and
manufacturing teams. In the case of a violation, the axis of the PLP hole must be parallel to die line, or
d

tilted at an angle “ ” such that -3° ≤ ≤ 3°.
