Experiment No:-07 DATE:24-09-20 Aim: To Realize Log and Antilog Amplifier Using Op-Amp

The document describes an experiment to realize a logarithmic amplifier and an antilogarithmic amplifier using an op-amp. It explains the theory behind how a diode in the feedback path of an op-amp inverting configuration results in an output voltage proportional to the negative logarithm of the input voltage for a log amplifier. For an antilog amplifier, the output is proportional to the exponential of the input voltage. The experiment involves simulating the two amplifier circuits and observing that the output varies logarithmically or exponentially with respect to the input voltage as expected. Graphs are plotted from the simulation results to verify the logarithmic and exponential relationships between input and output voltages.

EXPERIMENT NO:- 07 DATE:24-09-20

AIM: TO REALIZE LOG AND ANTILOG AMPLIFIER USING OP-AMP

APPARATUS:

1. Simulation Package
THEORY:

The schematic of a simple Op-amp diode log amplifier is shown above. This is nothing but an
op-amp wired in closed loop inverting configuration with a diode in the feedback path. The
voltage across the diode will be always proportional to the log of the current through it and
when a diode is placed in the feedback path of an op-amp in inverting mode, the output
voltage will be proportional to the negative log of the input current. Since the input current is
proportional to the input voltage, one can say that the output voltage will be proportional to
the negative log of the input voltage.

Vin = Is R e(Vd/Vt)......................(1)

Considering that the negative of the voltage across diode is the output voltage Vout (see the
circuit diagram (fig1)), we can rearrange the equation (1) to get

Vout = -Vt In(Vin/IsR)

Anti log amplifier is one which provides output proportional to the anti log(Interchange
position of diode and resistor) i.e. exponential to the input voltage. If V i is the input signal
applied to a Anti log amplifier then the output is V o=K*exp(a*Vi) where K is proportionality
constant, a is constant

PROCEDURE:

1. Make the circuit schematic in simulation package

2. Now vary the input voltage magnitude.
3. Observe the change in output voltage.
4. Output voltage varies with respect to input as per logarithmic or antilogarithmic way.
5. Plot the graph in excel between input and output voltage for both log and antilog
amplifier. Copy that graph in results.

CONCLUSION:

From this experiment, we learnt about logarithmic and antilogarithmic amplifiers.

We also learnt about how to stimulate the amplifiers in lt spice. The main use of
logarithmic amplifier is to measure signal strength.

TEST YOUR SELF:

1. Simulate the log and antilog amplifier using transistor in place of diode. (Hint:
Collector as anode of diode, base grounded, emitter as cathode of diode)
2. Multiply 0.2 and 0.4 with log and antilog amplifier.
3. Divide 0.7 by 2 with log and antilog amplifier.
