Back To School Survey

Lesson Ideas
• I like to give this to my students on the first day of classes—it’s the last thing
they expect me to give to them. I teach in a high-school and so the kids
cycle through all 8 of their classes in the first two days. Their heads must ex-
plode with all the information that gets given to them in those first few days.
I like to wait until at least the second or third class until I go over class expec-
tations and the course curriculum. (I often have several students transfer in /
out in the first week so this saves me some paperwork.)
• Ask students to share some of their answers with someone they don’t
know… I usually ask them to share 4 answers and then find a new
partner and share another four answers until they’ve shared most of them.
(You can do this 4-5 times because there are 25 questions.)
• Do a survey of some of the answers and see if there are any patterns or
trends.
• Ask students to pick one of their answers and turn it into a paragraph—they
must explain their answer in a well-written paragraph.
• Ask students to make a collage of their answers using words, pictures from
the internet, magazine pictures or original artwork.
• Play a snippet of the songs that each of the students got stuck in their head.
(Tee hee…. this could be funny!)
• Do the survey yourself and be willing to share your answers with the class—
they love getting to know me as much as I enjoy getting to know them.
