Collection of Problems and Short Questions. 1-5

This document contains 5 problems and short questions related to flight mechanics. It asks the reader to determine various flight parameters as functions of other parameters like wind speed, ground speed, yaw angle, pitch angle, roll angle, angle of attack, and slip angle. These include determining the ratio of aerodynamic to ground speed, angles between the aircraft axis and wind axis, angle of attack, pitch rate, pitch angle, roll rate, and roll angle. It provides references for further information on flight mechanics.

Collection of problems and short questions 1-5

1. bThe circumference shown in the figure is the path of an aircraft flight in a horizontal turn. A
uniform and constant wind 𝑉𝑤 in rightwards direction is contained in the plane of the
circumference. Aircraft reference axis 𝑋𝑏 is tangent to the circumference, and aircraft speed
with respect to ground 𝑉𝑔 is constant and known (along 𝑋𝑏 ).

a) Determine the ratio aerodynamic speed/ground speed (𝑉/𝑉𝑔 ) as a function of ground

speed 𝑉𝑔 , aircraft yaw angle Ψ, and wind speed 𝑉𝑤 .
b) Determine the angle 𝛽 ′ = 𝑓(𝑉𝑤 /𝑉𝑔 , Ψ), where 𝛽 ′ is the angle between 𝑋𝑏 and 𝑋𝑤 .
c) Determine the slideslip angle 𝛽 = 𝑓(𝑉𝑤 /𝑉𝑔 , Ψ, ϕ).
d) Determine the angle of attack 𝛼 = 𝑓(𝑉𝑤 /𝑉𝑔 , Ψ, ϕ).
e) Determine previous expressions in case of wind speed is much smaller than ground
speed.

2. bDetermine the pitch of velocity 𝛾 as function of pitch of aircraft θ, the roll of aircraft 𝜙, the
angle of attack 𝛼, and the slideslip angle 𝛽.

3. bDetermine the pitch of aircraft θ as function of pitch of velocity 𝛾, the roll of velocity 𝜇, the
angle of attack 𝛼, and the slideslip angle 𝛽.

4. bDetermine the roll of velocity 𝜇 as function of pitch of aircraft θ, the roll of aircraft 𝜙, the
angle of attack 𝛼, and the slideslip angle 𝛽.

5. bDetermine the roll of aircraft 𝜙 as function of pitch of velocity 𝛾, the roll of velocity 𝜇, the
angle of attack 𝛼, and the slideslip angle 𝛽.
