CLASSIFICATION OF ANIMALS (week3)
Vertebrates – animals that have spines or backbones. Make up less than five percent of all
animal species on earth.
Groups:
• Birds – are the only type of animals that have feathers, breath air, have two legs and wings but
not all birds fly. Birds are warm-blooded, they can maintain an constant body temperature.
• Mammals – are warm-blooded and breath air. They have at least some fur or hair, and have
ears that stick out.
• Fish – live in the water and they can breath under water. They use gills, not lungs, to get
oxygen from the water around them. Fish has scales and fins, cold-blooded which means that
they cannot control there body temperature.
• Amphibians – cold-blooded, unlike fish, amphibians can live on land and in the water, they
have smooth, moist skin.
• Reptiles – cold-blooded, air-breathing animals and cannot breath under water. Has a dry and
scaly skin.
Invertebrates – animals that do no have backbones. Most animals in the world are
invertebrates.
Groups:
• Sponges – aquatic animals that are sac shaped and their body is full of spores.
• Jelly fish – their bodies are gelatinous and have tentacles.
• Corals – tiny marine animals that produce limestone residue, which give rise to beautiful
shapes.
• Worms – are long and soft, they move by dragging their body in the ground because they
have no feet.
• Mollusks – have soft body without legs. They protect their soft body with shells, but others
don’t have shells.
• Echinoderms – aquatic animals, their bodies have calcareous plates that form a shell. Balloon
shaped and are covered in spikes that they use to defend themselves.
• Arthropods – their bodies are covered by an external skeleton called cuticle.

ANIMALS AND ITS USE (week3)
Animals are the gift of nature to us. They are the ones which are close associated with us in
daily life. Animals contribute a lot to human lives even the plants and it will be tough to
imagine life without animals. Animals act are the source of food, clothing, medicine and even
economic benefits.
Importance of animals in human life:
1. Animals are great companion – animals offer us happiness and can be our best friend.
2. Animals are perfect caregiver – trained animals perform several tasks to assist people with
disabilities.
3. Animals work for human – animals like horses, ox, male buffalo, donkeys, etc. are used for
transportation. In desert, camels are used.
4. Animals as source of livelihood – to make a living by selling meat, milk, hair, leather etc.
5. Animals as source of food – cows, buffaloes, goats, camels, and donkeys are animals that
provide milk which is a daily essential in humans live. Eggs from birds like hens, turkeys,
ducks, etc. are good source of protein. And we consume many animals meat as part of the diet.
6. Animals for sports and leisure – animals are used in circus to exhibit activities for our
entertainment, are kept in the zoo for knowledge purposes, used for racing activities, and assist
as in different sports.
7. Animals used for rehabilitation – to provide comfort, affection and used for healing.
8. Animals used for safety & security – to guard the master and his house, trace objects using
their sense of smell, ward off animals near the airport, etc.
9. Animals used for medicine – a new medicine discovered is evaluated by experimenting on
test animals first.
