Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control engineering in the design of products and manufacturing processes. A mechatronic system uses sensors to collect input data, a microcontroller or PLC as the control system, and actuators to produce motion or display outputs based on feedback from the inputs. Mechatronic systems can be found in everyday devices like home appliances, vehicles, and industrial automation equipment.

INTRODUCTION TO MECHATRONICS

Session 1 - Summary

1. Mechatronics is an inter-disciplinary subject that involves the use of electronics, mechanical,

computer control in the design of products, intelligent systems or automation of
manufacturing process.

2. Basically, a mechatronic system reacts based on the feedback of its inputs. The response is
sent through the outputs in the form of motion or display.

3. A mechatronic system is composed of three main components such as: Inputs (sensors and
switches), System (Microcontroller or PLC) and Outputs (actuators or displays).

4. Mechatronic applications can be found in everyday life ranging from home appliances,
vehicle technologies, consumer products and automation processes.

Session 2 – Summary

1. Direct current electricity flows from a source (Battery or power supply) to the ground with
several components in between such as resistors, diodes, sensors. The current flows in one
direction only and the circuit needs to be closed for it to work.

2. Sensors measure a certain physical parameter and convert it to an electrical signal to the
control system.

3. Resistors are electrical components that resist the flow of electricity and convert some of the
electrical energy into heat. They are color coded to indicate its resistance value.

4. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are electrical components that convert electrical energy into
light.

5. Light sensors sense changes in light intensity. A photocell varies its resistance with changes in
light intensity.

6. Pressure sensors measure pressure values in fluids. They are very useful in weather forecasting,
equipment monitoring and altitude determination.

7. Temperature sensors respond to changes in temperature by varying its electrical properties.

The most popular ones are the thermistors and thermocouples.

8. Proximity sensors detect the presence of objects or obstacles in a specified range.
