Introduction

Often, it is essential to view the dip angle and azimuth of a fault in a

stereonet to observe the relationship between the neighborhood fault
sets. While characterizing fracture sets in an area, dip angle and azimuth
of major interpreted faults may give some guidance for orientation of
major Fracture sets.

While working in Petrel, the user might want to visualize the major
interpreted faults in stereonets and calculate their orientation with respect
to other adjoining faults. The following workflow will demonstrate how it is
possible to extract the dip angle and azimuth information from the
interpreted faults and visualizing their relationship in stereonets.
Selecting Faults

Select the faults you wish to view in

a stereonet.
Convert each fault to a fault
surface by right clicking on each
fault separately and select Convert
to fault surface.
The result will appear at the bottom
of the input pane.
Generate Dip Angle/Azimuth Attributes

Select the generated fault surface

in the input pane and RMB to
generate dip angle and dip azimuth
attributes.
Convert Fault to Points

Convert the fault surfaces to points

which can be visualised in the
stereonet.
Calculate Dip Angle/Azimuth Attributes for Points

Use the calculator for the point attributes to

generate the points attributes for Dip angle
& Dip Azimuth.
Use the following equations to generate the
point attribute of dip angle and dip azimuth
using the generated attributes.

Dipangle=Main_Fault_NS_1_Dip_angle(x,y)
Dipazimuth=Main_Fault_NS_1_Dip_azimuth(x,y)

*Ensure the correct template is selected and use

the to drop the surface into the equation.
Results
Follow the same workflow for other faults to generate the point attribute for dip angle &
dip azimuth.
Finally visualize the relationships in a stereonet window.
