SELF (With Correction)

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-directed learning skills and academic performance in mathematics among junior high school students. Specifically, it will determine the level of students' self-directed skills in areas like awareness, learning strategies, activities, evaluation, and interpersonal skills. It will also assess their academic performance in mathematics based on grades. The study hypothesizes that there is no significant relationship between self-directed learning skills and academic performance. The study is grounded in literature suggesting self-directed skills influence academic results and will focus on students in one school in Davao City, Philippines.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Education is one of the most significant factors in the development of a

human resource that is important for developing the every field of a society.

Students commonly problem these days is learning on their own, especially in

mathematics. Mathematics is a fascinating but challenging topic. Several studies

identified various factors that contributed to poor student performance in this

area. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of self directed and self-

efficacy towards academic performance in mathematics. Learning alone or self

directed, in a broad sense, is any practice that has a direct impact on any

person's cognitive growth, skills, and attitude. It is composed of different

disciplines that any human being can study and understand. It is one of the most

developed disciplines and is part of every mathematics curriculum worldwide.

Two Singaporean teachers conducted research about their students on

how they manage their self regulated learning in answering their modules in

mathematics. It was stated that, students have to complete each module over

16-week semesters. Each module is characterized by 16 PBL (Problem Base

Learning) problems. Students will work in teams and each group (class) typically

comprises 25 students in 5 teams. Students will be given a problem at the

beginning of each day. As a team, they are expected to try to understand the
problem, research on information they need to respond to the problem and

collectively workout solutions to the given problem. In the process of solving the

problem, the students gain some understanding of the concepts and principles

related to the problem (Han and Teng, 2005). The Republic of Polytechnic in

Singapore, implements 1-day-1-problem PBL process to analyze the knowledge

and analytical skills of engineering mathematics students with their self-directed

learning behaviours in mathematics.

A research conducted in Cebu Technological University San Francisco

Campus, Cebu, Philippines where the respondents are 52 Education students

who were enrolled in the mathematics program. The success of students in

mathematics, as shown by the grades they have obtained, is influenced by

various factors. This research will mainly deal with the affective characteristics of

students, which concentrate on study behaviours and study attitudes, which are

then further referred to as study orientations as stated by Biswas (2015), among

the various factors. Students' main worries are getting hold of time management

and study habits. Kaushar (2013) states that most students now spend less time

learning, a large proportion of them do not follow any schedule, and they do not

understand the concept of the executives with the time.

Considering the number of literature which suggests the strong

relationship between Self-directed skill and towards Academic Performance of

students in Mathematics, this study explored the same path by investigating the

experience of Grade 8 Students in the Philippines, particularly at Padada National

High School Davao del-Sur. This study was anchored on Bandura's Social

Cognitive Theory, which views the human being as cognitive, self- regulatory,

and self-reflective (Yiu & Cheung, 2011). According to Bandura (1977), self-

efficacy includes a component of this theory which is defined as beliefs in one's

capabilities to organize and execute the course of action required to produce

given attainments. Further, the findings showed that self-directed skills of

students towards Mathematics manifested a significant effect or contribution to

Students Academic Performance in this subject. The Academic Performance of

the students in Mathematics was only on the approaching proficiency level, the

student must develop skills and fundamental knowledge and core understanding,

this is precisely what will enable students to enhance their skills and

understanding of the subject.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the influence of self-directed learning

skills towards the academic performance of junior high school students in

mathematics. Specifically, this answered the following questions:

1. What is the extent of self-directed learning in terms of:

1.1 awareness;
1.2 learning strategies;

1.3 learning activities;

1.4 evaluation; and

1.5 interpersonal skills?

1.6 positive and negative attitude in learning

2. What is the level of students’ academic performance in

mathematics in terms of grades?

3. Is there a significant relationship between self-directed learning

skills and academic performance in mathematics?

Hypothesis

The null hypotheses of this study were tested 0.05 as level of

significance.

1. There is no significant relationship between self-directed learning

skills and academic performance in mathematics

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

This study is anchored on the proposition of Cazan and Schiopca (2013),

Hsu and Shiue (2005), and Williamson (2007).

In association of self-directed learning skills and academic performance,

according to Cazan and Schiopca (2013) that self-directed learning skills has

been associated with students’ academic performance. Moreover, Hsu and Shiue

(2005) further discussed self-directed learning skills as a strong factor for

predicting learners’ academic performance in traditional learning settings or non-

web-based distance learning. Furthermore, Williamson (2007) had identified

salient factors of self-directed learning skills: awareness, learning strategies,

learning activities, evaluation, and interpersonal skills.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of self-directed

learning skills and academic performance in mathematics and determine the

influence of self-directed learning skills towards the academic performance of

junior high school students in mathematics.

Scope and Limitations
