Calibration of Temperature Transmitter Anil Kumar Kalla

This document provides instructions for calibrating different types of temperature transmitters and checking temperature elements. It describes the necessary test equipment, including multi-meters, temperature baths, decade boxes, and HART communicators. The steps include connecting the transmitter, applying reference resistance or voltage values at different temperature points, and adjusting the transmitter's sensor trims if the output current is not within accuracy limits. It also outlines how to check temperature elements by measuring their resistance or voltage output at various temperatures and comparing to standard charts.

 Non-Smart: Input Supply 24VDC, mV & resistance, Output - 4-20mA
 Smart: Input Supply 24VDC, mV & resistance, Output - 4-20mA
 Field bus: Input Supply 24VDC, Output (Digital Signal).

TEST EQUIPMENTS

Multi-Meter Master Indicator Dry/Wet Bath Decade box HART

 Multi-Meter: Used for measuring output signal of the Transmitter & element.
 Master Indicator: Used for compare with process Transmitter.
 Dry/Wet Bath: Used for create required temp for temp element checking.
 Decade Box: Used for create required resistance
 HART: Used for Configuration for Smart and FF Transmitter.
Temperature Transmitter Calibration
Obtain work permit and ensure Tag no and location of the Transmitter

Test Equipment’s –
 Standard Multi meter and Standard Multi Source or Decade Box & mV Source.
 Standard Temperature element Chart (RTD,TC)
 Hart Communicator (Smart Transmitter)

1. Instrument Calibration Location

 Check 24VDC polarities before connecting transmitter.
 In Lab calibration we need 250 Ohms Resistor (Smart TX) and connect resistor in
series with power source and transmitter.
 Connect Hart Communicator.
 If calibration will done in field just remove Cover then remove RTD or TC cable from
Transmitter and Connect Source Cable there.
 Put required values with the help of Standard Temperature Chart.
2. Lower sensor trim
 If transmitter range is -50 ◦C to +50 ◦C is there then you have to apply Resistance for
LRV (-50◦C/ 4mA) if showing less then or more then 4mA then you have to trim lower
sensor trim.
3. Upper sensor trim
 Same as lower sensor trim as in upper sensor just apply required resistance (+50) to
transmitter check the output if is showing less then or more then 20mA then trim
upper sensor trim
Then Apply Required Values
0% -50 ◦C 4mA
25% -25 ◦C 8mA
50% 0 ◦C 12mA
75% +25 ◦C 16mA
100% +50◦C 20mA

Note-1-- Always make sure that Cold Junction Compensation should be AUTO
mode or Check ambient Temperature while calibrating TC.

Note -2-- Check the output of the transmitter if it with in the accuracy or error
limits no need to trim the transmitter.
Temperature Transmitter Calibration
 Test Equipment’s – Standard Multi meter and Standard Ohm or mV Calibrator
 Standard Calibrator (Decade box (Pots in Series), mV source OR multi source
calibrator)
 Hart Communicator

1. Instrument Calibration Location

In Lab calibration we need 250 Ohms Resistor and connect resistor in series with
power source and transmitter.
If calibration will done in field just remove terminal cover just apply require value
ohms/mV there. (Require value means LRV & URV with standard chart).

2. Check 24VDC polarities before connecting transmitter and (CJC mode in AUTO or
manual mode it’s required for Thermocouple type transmitter calibration). For RTD
check it is 2wire, 3wire or 4wire type. And PT-100 or PT-1000 Check and connect
according to RTD type.

3. Lower sensor trim

If transmitter range is starts with 0 Deg C then apply 100 ohms for PT-100 or apply
1000 ohms for PT-1000 for LRV (4mA)if showing less then or more then 4mA then
you have to trim lower sensor trim.

4. Upper sensor trim

Same as lower sensor trim as in upper sensor just apply required ohms ( According to
Deg-Ohms chart) (for 100 Deg – 138.5 ohms ) to transmitter check the output if is
showing less then or more then 20mA then trim upper sensor trim
Then Apply required ohms (LRV and URV)
% Deg-C Ohms mA
0 0 100.00 4
25 25 109.73 8
50 50 119.40 12
75 75 128.99 16
100 100 138.50 20

Note - Check the output of the transmitter if it with in the accuracy or error limits
then no need to trim the transmitter.
Temperature Element Checking
Test Equipment’s –
 Standard Multi meter.
 Standard Temperature element output Chart (RTD,TC)
 Dry and Wet Temperature Bath.

1. Give required temperature set point (Linear wise) on that temperature bath
according to range of the element which is used in process.
2. Wait for few minutes for getting required temperature in temp bath.
3. Put temperature element inside bath well according to Size (OD) of the element.
4. Wait for few minutes to get accurate value from temperature element then
measure with multimeter (Resistance and mV).
5. Compare with standard Temperature chart (RTD & TC). If temperature element
output matching with standard chart then temperature element is OK.
6. If found any deviation (Outside error limit) with standard chart then you have to
change temp element.
