PART A: PROGRAM EVALUATION

Executive Summary

The Johnson Elementary School Media Center is physically located on the outside
right wing of the school and it is the most prominent location for most of the
activities going on in the school. The media specialist and supporting staff work
together to keep the media center running smoothly. The media center is equipped
with a copier, news broadcast studio, and teacher resource center. The computer
labs are located in different locations around the school. There is a steady flow of
teachers and students visiting Mrs. Cardinal throughout the day.

Johnson Elementary is a Title I funded school with a sufficient amount of

technology resources. Most classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards,
projectors, document cameras, and laptops/Chromebooks. All grades (K-5) have
access to Chromebooks throughout the school. The media specialist also has extra
Chromebooks available in the event they are needed for something. The media
center is responsible for distributing and monitoring each piece of equipment and
keeping an inventory of incoming resources.

The media specialist, Mrs. Shannon Cardinal runs the media center and teaches
classes to grades K-5 students during their Specials times. She also addresses all
technology issues for staff and administration before a work order is put in for
technicians to come on site. Mrs. Cardinal maintains the school’s website and
broadcasts the morning news every morning. Shannon is responsible for making
sure all equipment is set up for Faculty Meetings and Staff Professional
Developments or any presentations that are usually held in the media center.

Methods

I used a variety of methods to collect information about Johnson Elementary

School’s Media Center. As in being a veteran music educator for the past 9 years, I
have observed from a distance and witnessed the way this system works for a
while. I’ve been working at Johnson Elementary for 3 years. Fortunately, I am able
to go to the media center and have dialogue and learning opportunities with the
media specialist for my practicum. I talked with the Principal, Mr. Hanner. He and
Mrs. Cardinal are responsible for ordering the technology equipment, and they
both have a vision to enhance learning through technology. I also had informal
interviews with teachers and along with the Media Specialist. I also looked at
various reports to gather information for the evaluation report.

Center Context and Goals

History: The media center is located at Johnson Elementary in the

Columbus/Muscogee County School District. Johnson is located on the mid-west
side of town of the city. Johnson is referred to as a Title I School, because 100
percent of the student population are eligible for free lunch. Johnson has been a
Title I school for many years, which has funded an abundance of technology
resources and tools for the teachers, students, and parents to utilize. This year,
because of Covid-19, students had to receive instruction digitally/virtually.
Students who did not have access to Wi-Fi, were provided hotspot WIFI. Over the
past 10 years, the amount of resources available have increased tremendously due
to the district and administration having a desire for a technology driven school.

Mission:  The mission of the Johnson Elementary School Library is to provide

students with the opportunity to become not only lifelong users of information, but
also creators of information. The library will support the curriculum by
collaborating with teachers, developing a collection that is representative of the
community, and implementing literacy instruction for students.
Goal: The main goal of the media center staff is to make a strong connection
between the school library and academic achievement. In order to achieve this
goal, we will:

 Promote student interest in reading.

 Promote and utilize technological resources and fluency.
 Promote appreciation of literature.
 Provide appropriate collections and resources to support and enrich the
school curriculum.
 Support district, state and national standards.
 Provide an attractive and supportive environment for students and
faculty.

Center Activities

The media center at Johnson serves many purposes. As I stated earlier, the media
center is where most activities and meetings are held at Johnson. Along with
normal book circulation, the media center houses printing, laminator, copier, poster
maker, and teacher resource room. The media center is also a place where small
group and occasionally whole group instructional sessions take place, along with
remediation and gifted services. There are some conference rooms available to
work with students and for teachers to collaborate. There are many professional
development sessions that take place in the media center before or after school.

Evaluation
Based on what I have observed and the data that I have collected, it is obvious that
Johnson’s Media Center is operating efficiently. I have witnessed Mrs. Cardinal
working with teachers and students to fulfill the mainstream goal of making a
connection between the library and academic achievement. The school is equipped
with an abundance of technology to fully incorporate and integrate technology
enhanced lessons in all classes. There is a strong desire with teachers at Johnson
when it comes to technology. They understand and appreciate having it at their
fingertips. The teachers have taken the time to embrace the use of technology in
the classroom. Even though it seems to be a challenge at times, they understand the
purpose and benefit of using technology in the classroom.

Recommendations:

- The media specialist could introduce an easy Web2.0 tool for teachers to
use/try that week. Provide incentives for teachers to use the tool a couple
times that week. The more teachers use technology in their classrooms, the
more they will buy into it when they see the benefits.
- I would recommend that the media specialists provide weekly technology
tips for teachers to utilize in the classroom.
- The website should be updated more frequently with resources that are
relevant for students and parents. Changes should be made frequently, and
grade level websites should be linked to the school’s site.
