Functions of Art

The Functions of Art can be classified according to:


1. Personal Functions of Art
 The personal functions of art are varied and highly subjective. This means that
it’s functions depend on the person – the artist who created the art. The artist
may create an art out of need for self expression.
2. Social Functions of Art
 Art is considered to have a social function when it addresses a particular
collective interest as opposed to a personal interest.
 It seeks or tends to influence the collective behavior of a people. It is created to
be seen or used primarily in public situation.
3. Physical Functions of Art
 The physical functions of art are the easiest to spot and understand because
these are objects which functions to make our lives physically comfortable. These
can be found in artworks that are crafted in order to serve physical purpose.

Other Functions of Art


1. Educational Function
 Art was used as a visual tool to teach or share information to others. It has symbols
and signs to illustrate knowledge not given in words.
2. Political Function
 It is often designed to deliver a certain message, always carries a social function. It
is used to reinforce and enhance a sense of identity and ideological connection to
specific political views, parties and/or people.
3. Spiritual Function
 Artist create art to express spiritual beliefs about life controlled by the force of a
higher power. Concerns a question about our ultimate place on this Earth.
4. Sculpture
 Sculpture were made in order to commemorate important figures in history. Jose
Rizal's monument in Luneta Park and Andres Bonifacio's Monument in Caloocan are
common examples.
 Coins are also a manifestations of sculpting's function.
5. Architecture
 It is another form of art that readily lends itself to multiple functions.
 It also might be the most prominent functional art form because it is not easily
constructed and replaced unlike other forms of unlike furniture and paintings
unlike buildings which take much time to erect and destroy.
 It is in architecture where one can find the intimate connection of function and
form.
