QUESTION 1
An over-hanging beam is roller supported and pinned at B and D respectively. The 4.6 m beam
is subjected to various loadings as shown in Figure Q1. Assuming EI is constant throughout
the beam.
a) Using Macaulay’s method, establish the slope and deflection equations of the beam
as a function of x. (CO2-PO2) (C4)
(18 marks)
b) Justify the point of maximum deflection and briefly estimate its value.

QUESTION 2
A simply supported beam subjected to a point load of 15 kN and a uniform distributed load of
50 kN/m as shown in Figure Q2. Assuming EI is constant throughout the beam and the weight
of the beam can be neglected. Using Moment-Area Method, draw the M/EI diagrams and
calculate the deflection at the middle of the beam. (CO2-PO2) (C2)

QUESTION 3
A beam as shown in Figure Q3 is fixed supported at A, roller supported at D and hinged at C.
Given that the flexural rigidity EI is constant in its entire length where 𝐸 = 200 𝑀𝑃𝑎, 𝐼 = 83 ×
106 𝑚𝑚4 , calculate the vertical displacement of point B and point C using double integration
method. (CO2-PO2) (C4)

QUESTION 4
Two solid steel shafts are connected by the gears with diameter of gear C and D is 240 mm
and 150 mm, respectively. Shaft AC is made from a 50 mm diameter rod and is connected to
the 60 mm diameter shaft DE as shown in Figure Q4. Determine the angle of twist of end A
of shaft AC when the torque T = 45 Nm is applied. Take G = 80 GPa. (CO1-PO1) (C2)

QUESTION 5
The prismatic aluminum rod (diameter 30 mm), fixed at both ends, as shown in Figure Q5 is
subjected to a torque TB at B and another torque 50 Nm at C. If there is zero reaction at A,
solve for TB, the reaction torque at D and the angles of twist at B and C. Assume the modulus
of rigidity of aluminum as 28 GPa. (CO1-PO1) (C2)

QUESTION 6
An observation deck to view the city is supported by a row of steel columns as shown in Figure
Q6. Each column which having length L = 3.5 m and outer diameter d = 150 mm is designed
to support a compressive load of P =120 kN. The bases of the columns are set in concrete
footing resulting in a built-in constraint and the tops of the columns are supported laterally by
the deck, which can be considered to be a pinned joint. Calculate the minimum required
thickness t of the columns if the factor of safety of 3 is required with respect to Euler’s Buckling.
Use E = 200 GPa. (CO1-PO1) (C4)

QUESTION 7
A slender rectangular column made from steel having a cross-section as shown in Figure Q7,
is subjected to an axial compressive load P. The column has a fixed end at B and two smooth
fixed plates restrained at end A. Design the most efficient cross section for the column,
knowing that L = 1000mm, E = 210 GPa, P = 30 kN and that factor of safety, 2 is required.
Note: the critical stresses corresponding to the two possible modes of buckling are equal.
