Studies show that before we were colonized we already have our

language which was proven by the riddles, proverbs, chants myths,
folksongs and epic was written and used by then. As the Spaniard
colonized the Philippines they introduces Christianity which causes
writers to write about Christian Doctrines. Before this era ends
revolutionary arise, one of them was Dr. Jose Rizal. His Mi Ultimo Adios
and El Filibusterismo made the Filipinos then realized about the injustice
that they experienced under the Spanish regime. After 333 years under
Spanish colonization. We were again colonized by the Americans. They
introduced the free public school system and the English language to us.
This was considered as the year of apprenticeship in writing. Filipino
writers were only limited to writing about love and youth. Japanese
colonization happened right after the American colonization. It was
described as four years of hunger and terror. Writers were then free to
express their ideas and feelings over what they experienced.
