Module 5 – The Teacher as a Professional

Lesson 6: CA 578 – Teachers as Persons in Authority

Activity:
As shown in the picture, authority pertains to the rights to ask or
request others, especially learners to do a certain task. Teachers are
expected to ask students to do many things within a day which includes tasks
that will improve or enhance their learning. Teachers need authority to make
her students engaged into learning. This authority allows a teacher to indulge
his or her students to participate and express the students’ thoughts and
ideas. Without teaching authority, our efficacy as a teacher will diminish, and
the learning progress and process will deteriorate.

Analysis:
1. Based on the activity above, what do you mean by teacher
authority?

Teacher authority pertains to the power to influence students’

behavior, to ask them to do something or some tasks, and to examine
classroom interactions.

2. How do you feel upon knowing the authority of teachers in the

classroom?

Upon knowing the authority of teachers in the classroom, I felt

that somehow there is a dire need for a teacher to possess this kind of
power. Having the authority allows you as an educator to boost your
students’ capacity and encourage them to interact in order to learn.
With the authority of teachers in the classroom, the attainment of the
learning outcomes is ensured, knowing that with power the subject
matter will be taken seriously instead of being treated mildly, or worse
as a joke.

3. How do teachers utilize this authority in the classroom?

Teachers utilize their authority in the classroom by implementing

rules and rewards and punishment which could be the backbone of the
classroom and the means to discipline students’ behavior.
