Research Methods Course Article Review

The study investigated the influence of handshakes on first impression accuracy. 141 undergraduate students participated where some shook hands with targets and others did not during an introduction. The hypothesis was that handshakes make first impressions more accurate. The results found that extraversion was the only trait accurately detected in all handshake conditions, supporting past research. The authors suggested future research could examine why conscientiousness is encoded in a handshake.

Article Review

Each question below refers to one of the components of the research process as described in

Table 1-2 (p. 4) of your book. Use the following journal article to answer each question. The

article is given as Article 1 in the content area.

Frank J. Bernieri, and Kristen N. Petty (2011). The influence of handshakes on first impression

accuracy. Psychology Press, 6 (2), 78–87

Try not to get discouraged by the technical writing of research reports; remember, reading APA

format articles gets easier the more often you do it!

1. Problem: Briefly describe the problem under investigation. In other words, what were the

researchers interested in studying?

In this article, researchers were interested in studying the influence of handshakes on first

impression accuracy.

2. Literature Review: Briefly describe some of the research reviewed in the introduction.

The researches reviewed that the personality appears to be encoded in handshakes. Moreover,

handshakes impact first impressions and the handshakes can influence interaction outcomes like

job interview evaluations.

3. Theoretical Considerations: What theory or theories guided this research (if any)?

The method selected here was derived from the theoretical work of Heider and empirical work

of Brunswik.

4. Hypothesis: What was the hypothesis or hypotheses? (Note: There were several

hypotheses related to gender, personality, and first impressions)

The hypothesis stated that the handshakes make first impressions more accurate. It is an

appropriate methodology needed to be devised that would be conceptually precise and valid.

5. Research Design: Briefly describe the research design. For example, how many

participants were in the study? What did those participants do as part of their

participation?

141 undergraduate students including 35 men and 106 women ranging in age from 18 to 46

years received course credit for their participation.

6. Data Analysis and Statistical Decisions: Briefly describe the main results of the study.

(Hint: If you are having trouble understanding the Results section, read the beginning of

the Discussion section or the Abstract for a synopsis).

Study stated that extraversion was the only trait accurately detected in all handshake conditions.

50% of the targets offered and shook hands with the participant as part of the introduction, 50%

did not.

7. Decisions in Terms of Past Research and Theory: Was the hypothesis supported? How do

these results fit in with past research?

The result is consistent with those reported in other studies that have been investigating the

accuracy of impressions.

8. Finding a New Problem: Did the authors of this study suggest new research based on

these results? Explain.

Future problem: Why is there conscientiousness in a handshake?
