The document discusses various parts of a motorcycle and their functions, including brakes, chain, engine, frame, suspension, tires, transmission, wheels, handlebars, and headlights. It then defines defensive driving as a set of driving skills that allows a driver to avoid collisions caused by other drivers or poor weather conditions. Some tips for defensive driving include planning ahead, controlling speed, being prepared to react to others, respecting other road users, and avoiding distractions. Taking a defensive driving course can reduce insurance rates and points on a driver's license following a traffic ticket. Course lengths and formats vary by state.

MOTORCYCLE

A motorcycle, often called a

motorbike, bike, or cycle, is a two or three-
wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycle design
varies greatly to suit a range of different
purposes: long-distance travel, commuting,
cruising, sport including racing, and off-road
riding.

Basic Parts of a Motorcycle and their

Functions
Brakes It’s useful to know how your brakes work. Not
only because they’re essential for stopping, but
because knowing how to replace them can
yourself save you a lot of money. Not to
mention, it’s useful information to know in a
pinch. Motorcycle brakes come in two
different types — drum and disc brakes with
one set of brakes being on the front wheel and
another set on the rear wheel.
Chain The chain connects the transmission to the rear
wheel. And it makes the rear wheel turn, which
powers the motorcycle.
Engine The engine powers the vehicle, and in this
case, a motorcycle. Knowing what type of oil
your engine takes is essential, especially if you
have a leak or are running low while riding.
Frame The frame, typically made from aluminum or
steel, is the core structure of the bike, since it
supports the engine and key components/parts.
Suspension The suspension serves a few purposes:
handling and braking, first and foremost, but
also protecting the rider from bumps, road
noise, and vibrations. If a motorcycle doesn’t
have good suspension, then it will be a bumpy
and unpleasant ride, to say the least.
Tires Tires are the inflatable rubber tubes that are
attached to the wheels. These are what people
refer to when their bike is flat and what needs
replaced when a driver has a flat tire or the
tread of the tires are worn down.
Transmission The transmission delivers power to the
motorcycle. Taking it a step further, the
transmission delivers power from the engine to
the rear wheel.
Wheels Wheels are what the tires attach onto. They
receive power from the engine and actually put
the bike in motion.
Handlebars A tubular component of a motorcycle's steering
mechanism. Handlebars provide a mounting
place for controls such as brake, throttle,
clutch, horn, light switches and rear view
mirrors; and they help to support part of the
rider's weight. Even when a handlebar is a
single piece it is usually referred to in the
plural as handlebars.
Motorcycle headlights Motorcycle headlights are one of the most
important safety features of a motorcycle. They
work in both giving you visibility at low light
conditions or at night, and they also let people
know that you're there.

What is defensive driving?

It is a set of driving skills that allows you to defend yourself against possible collisions
caused by bad drivers, drunk drivers, and poor weather. If you look ahead and keep your eyes
moving, you will spot potential hazards more easily. Once you have identified a potential hazard
and decided what to do, act immediately. Defensive drivers are able to avoid dangers on the
road by using their safe driving practices.

Tips for defensive driving:

 Plan ahead for the unexpected.

 Be able to control speed
 Be Prepared to react to other drivers
 Do not expect the other driver to do what you think he or she should do
 Respect other users of the roadway.
 Be aware of driving in special road and weather conditions
 Be alert and avoid distractions, e.g., cell phone use, eating.
Don't make assumptions about other driver’s intentions. If you expect drivers in parked
vehicles to remain parked at all times, always yield at intersections, or remain in one lane at all
times, etc., you risk being caught off guard when drivers do not do what's expected.

Benefits of Defensive Driving

The benefits of taking a defensive driving class vary with each state, but often include a
reduction of points on your driver's license following a ticket and the assurance that insurance
rates will not increase. In some states, taking a defensive driving course can mean a reduction of
up to 10% in your insurance rates for a period of three to five years.

Just as the benefits of defensive driving classes vary with each state, so do the
requirements. While most basic defensive driving classes are four hours long, some can be as
long as six or eight hours.

In some states, students have the option to take defensive driving courses online or by
watching a video tape or DVD, while other states only allow students to take defensive driving in
a classroom setting.
