Fall Counting Lesson Plan

This lesson plan aims to teach kindergarten students to represent objects with numbers. Students will count pumpkins in book illustrations and on the whiteboard. They will then complete a worksheet matching numbers to pictures of different amounts of pumpkins. The teacher provides differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications as needed. Student understanding will be assessed by having them cut out and glue the right number by each pumpkin picture. The next lesson will focus on matching numbers of leaves to trees.

STUDENT TEACHER LESSON PLAN

Camryn Santiago

Day: Friday Date: 10/23/2020

Subject: Fall Counting

Common Core Standard(s):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to

cardinality.
Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to represent objects with a
number.

Resources/Materials List:
● One Leaf, Two Leaves, Count with Me! by John Micklos Jr.
● Pumpkin Patch Worksheet
● Additional Count and Color Worksheet
● “Counting 1-10”
● Scissors
● Glue sticks
● Pointer
● Magnetic whiteboard
● Whiteboard markers
● Crayons
● Pumpkin Cutouts
○ Prepare these by copying and cutting out pumpkins so that there are 20 individual
pumpkins.
● Magnets
○ Use these to put on the back of each pumpkin so that it will stick to the board.

Procedure:
1. Ask students to join you on the rug.
2. Tell students that we are going to explore counting today.
3. Show students the One Leaf, Two Leaves, Count with Me! Book and read the title. Ask
what they think the book is about.
4. Read the book.
a. Stop at each page and have students count each leaf with you.
i. Make sure to point to each leaf as you count it so students do not get
confused.
b. You may ask students to come up and point to the leaves as well.
5. Say “great job friends? You are reading superstars! Now we will count pumpkins!”
6. Put any desired amount of pumpkins on the board in a straight line.
7. Say, “I just put some pumpkins on the board! Let’s count them together.”
a. Use the pointer to point to each pumpkin as you count them.
b. Once you have finished counting, write the number of pumpkins on the board.
c. Say, “great job class! Let me switch up the pumpkins now!”
8. Put a different amount of pumpkins on the board.
a. Say, “I have a new amount of pumpkins on the board! Please raise your hand if
you would like to count the pumpkins!”
i. Call on a student and hand them the pointer to use.
ii. Once done counting, write the number students counted on the board.
9. Repeat step 8 until all students that want to go up to the board have done so.
a. It is ok to repeat numbers. This will only help students reinforce counting in the
correct sequence and identify that each object has a number.
10. Show students the Pumpkin Patch Match worksheet.
a. Explain that there are pictures of pumpkins in different pumpkin patches.
i. Count the pumpkins in each pumpkin patch as a class
b. Tell students they are to cut out the numbers at the bottom of the sheet and
match the number to the correct pumpkin patch.
11. Count the pumpkins in the first pumpkin patch again and find the corresponding number
at the bottom of the sheet.
a. Say and demonstrate, “We counted four pumpkins in the first pumpkin patch. I
found the number four at the bottom of the worksheet. Now, I will cut out the
number found and glue it to the box next to the first pumpkin patch.”
i. Tell students they will be doing this at their desk/table.
12. Ask if students have any questions.
13. Send students back to their tables.
14. Walk around the room to observe and help students.
15. After all students have completed their work, return to the rug and end the lesson by
playing the “Counting 1-10” song.

Plans for differentiation:

● Student may need slower directions or more explanation
● Students who finish fast can do the additional Count and Color worksheet
● Students may work with a para
● Students may need visual or verbal cues
● Students may need extra time to finish this assignment

Plans for accommodation/modification:

Accommodation:
● A student may have their pieces already cut out
● A student may listen to the video at a slower speed on their own computer
● Students may need their own pumpkins to follow along with

Modification:
● A student may focus on fewer pumpkin patches
Assessment: I will know students have reached the objective when they can cut and paste the
correct number next to the pumpkin patch with that many pumpkins in it.

What’s next? Next, we will work on putting the correct number of leaves on a tree.
