MOUTH

I. LEUCOPLAKIA
 This is an oral mucosal white patch that won’t rub off. Not attributable to other dz.
 Pre-malignant lesion w high transformation rate (0.6-18%). Therefore refer all white oral lesions.
 Oral hairy leucoplakia is shaggy white patch on side of tongue, seen in HIV.  

 of white intra-oral lesions:


Idiopathic keratosis Aphthous stomatitis CA
Secondary syphilis Lichen planus Poor dental hygiene
Smoking SLE Candidasis

II. LEUCOPLAKIA
 White fur on erythematous tongue or buccal membrane.
 RF: extremes of age, DM, ABx, immunosuppression (steroids INH), cytotoxic, malignancy, HIV. If
in an apparently fit patient  HIV.
 Bleeds if scraped.
 Tx: nystatin suspension swill & swallow; or amphotericin lozenges. Fluconazole if oropharyngeal trush.

III. CHEILITIS (ANGULAR STOMATITIS)


 Fissuring of the mouth corners caused by denture problems, candidiasis, Fe & B2 (riboflavin) def.
