What is difference between a 120V/240V step-up and 240/120 V step-down single phase
transformers? Both transformers are rated 5 kVA and operated at 60 Hz. Explain your answer by
means of relevant diagrams and equations.
Question 2 [6
Marks]
(b) To maximize the power transfer to the speaker, a transformer of 1:3 turns ratio is used
between source and speaker as shown in Fig. E2.1b. Determine the power taken by the speaker.

Question 3 [10
Marks]
A single-phase transformer of 3 kVA, 60 Hz, has a voltage ratio on open circuit of 240 / 120 V.
The primary and secondary resistances are 0.25 Ω and 0.05 Ω respectively, the corresponding
leakage reactance being 0.75 Ω and 0.18 Ω. The transformer delivers current to the load at a 0.9
power factor lagging.

A-4 pole, lap-wound, long shunt, dc compound generator has useful flux per pole of 0.07 Wb.
The armature winding consists of 220 turns and the resistance per turns is 0.004 Ω. Calculate
the terminal voltage if the resistance of the shunt and series field are 100 Ω and 0.02 Ω
respectively; when the generator is running at 900 rpm with armature current 50 A. Also
calculate the output power in kW for the generator.
Question 9 [12
Marks]
An 8-pole d.c. generator has 640 armature conductors, and a useful flux of 0.05 Wb per pole.
The magnetic flux and the speed are such that each conductor is capable of carrying a full-
load current of 1A
a) If it is lap connected and runs at 1200 rpm determine:
I. The total e.m.f generated
II. The e.m.f generate per conductor
III. The total armature resistance
IV. The resistance per conductor
V. The total output power
b) If it is wave- wound connected determine:
I. The speed at which it is to be driven produce the same total e.m.f as I of a)
II. The e.m.f generated per conductor
III. The total armature resistance
IV. The resistance per conductor
V. The total output power
c) What are the three technical differences between a lap and wave wound 8-pole DC generator
based on a) and b)?
