Module 1 - Activity No. 1 (Prelim)

The document is an activity worksheet that provides definitions for various gear terminology. It lists key terms like herringbone gear, annular gear, bevel gears, helical gear, rack gear, worm gear, idler gear, module, addendum circle, addendum, contact ratio, face width, dedendum, whole depth, clearance, angle of action, base pitch, contact ratio, flank, circular thickness, miter, base circle, backlash, and bottom land. Students are instructed to write the correct definition for each term in the space provided.

Exercises Problem on Gear Terminologies
Name: BIASURA,CHRISTIAN JAY P.
Student No: 20141111015
Instruction: Write the correct answer on the space provided. Identify the following:

HERRINGBONE GEAR The other name of double helical gear.

____ANNULAR_____ In internal spur gear, it is the bigger gear.
____BEVEL GEARS__ Gears used to connect intersecting shafts, usually but not necessarily
at 90 degress
_____HELICAL_____ Also called twisted spur gears.
______RACK_______ It is used to change rotary motion to reciprocating motion
___WORM GEAR___ Gears used to transmit power between nonintersecting shafts, nearly
always at right angles to each other.
____IDLER GEAR___ The intermediate gear in a gear train arrangement
_____MODULE_____ The ratio of the pitch diameter to the no.of teeth.
_ADDENDUM CIRCLE The circle that bounds the outer ends of the gear teeth.
___ADDENDUM____ The radial distance between the pitch circle & the addendum circle.
__CONTACT RATIO_ The ratio of arc of action to circular pitch
_____FACE WIDTH__ The length of teeth in the axial direction (gear).
_DEDENDUM_____ The radial distance from the pitch circle to the root circle (gear).
WHOLE DEPTH Equal to the addendum plus the dedendum.
CLEARANCE The radial distance between the working- depth circle & the root
circle.
ANGLE OF ACTION The angle through which the gear turns from the particular pair of
teeth comes into contact until they go out of contact.
BASE PITCH The distance measured along the base circle from a point on one
tooth to the corresponding point on the adjacent tooth.
CONTACT RATIO The average number of teeth in contact for mating gears.
IDLER GEAR The intermediate gear in a gear train arrangement
FLANK The surface of the tooth between the pitch & the root cylinders.
CIRCULAR THICKNESS Also called tooth thickness (gear).
MITER Bevel gears of the same size mounted on a shaft at 90 deg
BASE CIRCLE Circle from which the involute is generated (gear).
BACKLASH Tooth space minus tooth thickness (gear).
BOTTOM LAND The surface of the bottom of the tooth space.
