Lesson Plan: Lesson Title/Focus Date Subject/Grade Level Time Duration Unit Teacher

The lesson plan focuses on teaching students about ratios, proportions, scale factors, and similarity through activities such as a scale factor photo project where students calculate scale using photos of themselves with objects, notes and examples on scale diagrams and similar figures, a jeopardy game for review, and individual practice problems to solidify their understanding of key concepts. The goal is for students to understand proportional reasoning and be able to apply concepts of scale, ratios, proportions, enlargements and reductions to solve problems involving similar figures by the end of the lesson.

Unit Scale Factors and Similarity Teacher Merrick Dennill

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
Learning
Outcomes: relationships among them.
Specific
3. Demonstrate an understanding of similarity of polygons.
Learning
Outcomes: 4. Draw and interpret scale diagrams of 2-D shapes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students will understand and apply the fact that:
1. A ratio is a comparison of the relative sizes of two numbers, done by dividing one of the
numbers into the other.
2. A proportion is an equation of two ratios.
3. You solve a proportion by cross-multiplying and then isolating the unknown quantity.
4. An enlargement is an increase in all the dimensions of an object by a constant factor.
5. A reduction is a decrease in the dimensions of an object by a constant factor.
6. A scale factor is the constant factor by which all dimensions of an object are enlarged or
reduced in a scale replica. A scale factor greater than one is an enlargement, less than one is a
reduction.
7. We find the scale factor of a replica by dividing a measurement from the diagram by the same
measurement on the original object.
8. Scale is a comparison between the size of a replica and the actual size of an object. It can be
expressed with a ratio, a fraction, as a percent, or with words.
9. A scale diagram is a drawing that is similar to the original object. It may be an enlargement or
a reduction, but must be proportionally identical.
10. Similar figures have the same shape, but are different sizes. Corresponding angles are equal
and corresponding sides are proportional.
11. Corresponding angles and side have the same relative position in a geometric figure.
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:  Does the student understand what a ratio is and how proportional
reasoning allows them to solve difficult problems?
Key Questions:  What is a ratio?
 What is a proportion?
 How do I solve for an unknown in a proportion?
 What is an enlargement?
 What is a reduction?
 What is a scale factor?
 How do we determine the scale factor of a replica?
 In mathematics, how is “scale” defined?
 What is a scale diagram?
 What are similar figures?
 What are corresponding angles and sides between two
figures?
Products/Performances:  Scale Factor Photo Project, Group discussion, individual problem
solving, journaling
LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 MathLinks 9  MathLinks9
 YouTube  Journals
 Projector
 Whiteboard and markers.
Introduction Time
Review of Unit 3 test. Pass the tests back and briefly go over them.
Allow time for students to ask questions about one of the answers 10min
on the test or their mark on a particular question.
Body Time
Learning Activity #1 Discussion and Modeling: Scale diagrams and models 20 min
Teacher Notes: Review of Wednesday’s class.
Assessments/
What is a ratio?
Differentiation
What is a proportion?
How do I solve for an unknown in a proportion?
What is an enlargement?
What is a reduction?
What is a scale factor?
Learning Activity #2 Scale Factor Photo project 30 min
Teacher Notes:  Take the whole class, as a group, around the school property and
Assessments/ take pictures of each of them beside tall or long objects (eg.
Differentiation
trees, the school bleachers, a sign...etc.). Email the photos to
yourself, paste them into Word, and print them off. Meanwhile,
the students can use the reference chart you created on the
door frame to measure their height in centimeters.
 When they receive their printed photo, they are to use
proportional reasoning to calculate the scale of the photo (using
their known height and their height in the photo) and the
approximate length of the object they are standing near.
Break Time: 10:00-10:15am

Learning Activity #3
Scale Factor and Similar figures study notes 45 min

Teacher Notes:  They already have the notes, go over them filling in the blanks
Assessments/ and adding additional commentary (make sure “enlargement”
Differentiation and “reduction” are added).
 Use the “SimilarTriangles” PowerPoint for visual support.
 Cover the rest of the slides discussing similar triangles,
corresponding angles and sides, and conditions for similarity
(SSS, AAA, SAS, ASA).
 What is the sum of the interior angles of a triangle?

Learning Activity #4
Jeopardy 20 min

Teacher Notes:  The PowerPoint file is under Math9 – Unit3 Lesson Plans
Assessments/  Students keep their own scores and answer by showing you
Differentiation the correct response on their whiteboards.
 This is a good chance for you to check the condition of their
whiteboard and marker.

Learning Activity #5 20 min

Guided and Individual Practice

Teacher Notes:
Assessments/
Differentiation
 pg 150 #12-16, 18, 22.

Journaling 5 min
Teacher Notes:  Students are given a little extra time to consolidate their notes
Assessments/ for the day, ask a question from their journal, and plan for
Differentiation success moving forward.
