Assistant Superintendent Shadow Reflection
Assistant Superintendent Shadow Reflection

Superintendent of Clay County Schools, Joan Haynie. Mrs. Haynie started her career at Clay
County Schools as the middle school gym teacher. She then advanced to vice principal at Clay
County Middle School and then principal at the same school. She is now assistant superintendent
and has been in that role for seven years. Shadowing Mrs. Haynie was an extremely valuable
experience.
The first day of observing with Mrs. Haynie consisted of an overwhelming amount of
information. She took me on a tour of the board office and introduced me to everyone there. We
discussed the different job titles, but her main point was that everyone does a little bit of
everything. Her roles as assistant superintendent range from budget to grants to teacher
certification. She also monitors teacher evaluations and is the main contact for WVEIS in the
county. There is not much that she does not do. We spent a lot of time going over the huge
renovation happening at the high school and how they got approval from the School Building
Authority for that project. She also broke down the school levy money and Titles I through V.
The second day of shadowing was also a busy day. On this day Mrs. Haynie was
struggling to balance the virtual case load of her elementary teachers. There are four elementary
schools in the county. The two bigger schools were having to take on virtual classes for the two
smaller elementary schools. The caseloads were very unbalanced and some teachers were not
able to handle the virtual load. She made a chart listing all of the teachers and their case load and
presented that to the superintendent to request changes be made. Once the superintendent saw the
changes on paper and agreed to them, she then had to go into WVEIS and make the changes. She
attempted to show me how to use the program, but it continued to crash. She explained that
WVEIS is supposedly upgrading, but it has not reached Clay County Schools yet.
The third day of observing consisted of the interview. We discussed this interview for
almost my entire day shadowing her. She had a lot to say, but it was okay because I learned so
much. Mrs. Haynie went into extreme detail about each question and even gave information
beyond what I was asking. I think she enjoyed getting to talk about her strengths and her role as
assistant superintendent.
Shadowing Joan Haynie was an amazing experience. Before shadowing her, I did not
fully understand what her role as assistant superintendent was. I also did not know Mrs. Haynie
very well and had only dealt with her on certification issues. This experience was eye opening
because of the way that Clay County runs its board of education. Mrs. Haynie does many jobs
and has to stay on top of minor details. She laughs about just how much there is to do, but I
know that it has to be a stressful job. During my time, I learned that you have to make smart
decisions and be meticulous about finances. Clay County is a small county and therefore
decisions have to be made according to what they can afford. Mrs. Haynie is incredibly
knowledgeable about her job and that made shadowing her a breeze. I will forever be thankful
