1. SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of repairing of potholes on existing bituminous surfaced roads. All
damaged and unstable parts shall be excavated until sound material is reached on all sides
and at the base of the excavation and compacted, a bituminous leveling course/bituminous
surfacing will then be placed after applying tack coat to the bottom layer and outer vertical
sides in accordance with section 3.1.4 of General specification and particular specification of
contract and drawings.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
1. Technical specifications of Contract Agreement (General/Particular)

3. CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

The following Machinery/equipment shall be used to carry out the Embankment activity:

1. Dumper (Tipper Trucks)

2. Roller
3. Hot mix plant
4. Browser for Tack coat
5. Picks, shovels and rakes and brooms etc.

4. CONSTRCUTION METHOD:

i). Cleaning the Pothole: Loose unbound soil in the pothole shall be removed by using a
pick, also pick down edge cracks to ensure that the rim of the pothole is sound.

Broom or hard brush shall be used to sweep and remove all the loose excavated material from
the bowl of the pothole. Sweep the edges of the pothole clean and remove the loose material.

Unsuitable excavated materials shall either be disposed of or stockpiled. The Shape of the
excavation shall then be made rectangular with vertical sides. The excavated material,
depending on its nature, shall be stocked nearby or disposed.

The bottom of the excavation shall then be shaped, trimmed, watered if necessary, and
Compacted.

The excavation shall then be filled with base material in layers and compacted
.
ii). Application of Tack coat: The inside and edges of the excavated area is “tacked” with
bitumen Emulsion as per section 3.7.3.3 of specification. The surface to be treated with tack
coat shall be dry.

iii). Preparation and Placing of Bituminous course: A bituminous leveling course or

bituminous surfacing will then be placed after applying tack coat to the bottom layer and
outer vertical sides in accordance with the procedure as described in Sections 3.7.3.2, 3.7.3.3
and 3.5.3.4.

 Preparation of Bituminous Material: The bituminous material shall be heated to the

specified temperature
.
 Preparation of Mineral Aggregate: The mineral aggregates for the mixture shall be
dried and heated before being placed in the mixer. The aggregates shall be heated to
the specified temperature

 Preparation of Mixture: The dried mineral aggregates prepared as prescribed above,

shall be combined in the amount of each fraction of aggregate required as per table
3.10-1 of specification. The proper amount of bituminous material shall be distributed
over the mineral aggregate and thoroughly mixed to produce a homogeneous mixture
in which all particles of the mineral aggregate are coated uniformly.

 Transportation and Delivery of Mixture: The mixture shall be transported from the
mixing plant to the point of use in vehicles.

 Spreading and Finishing: The mixture shall be laid upon an approved surface and only
when weather conditions are considered suitable. the Contractor shall use approved
spreading equipment or acceptable hand methods

 Compaction: Immediately after spreading, the surface shall be checked and any
inequalities adjusted. The mixture shall then be thoroughly and uniformly compacted
by rolling. To prevent adhesion of the mixture to the roller, the wheels shall be kept
properly moistened, excess water will not be permitted. The surface of the mixture
after compaction shall be smooth and to the level.
