Lesson

1 Writing Composite Type of News

What’s In

News, as previously discussed in Journalism 7, is an essay of facts that basically

informs. It is a wise storytelling of any event from everywhere else that has impact to
readers.
Write down the different types of news that you can remember.

Types
of News

Apart from the above mentioned types of news, there are other types of news
that pertain to the way they are written. These are:
1. Composite news story
2. In-depth news story
3. Investigative news story
What’s New

The Composite Type of News

In a composite story, two or more divergent aspects of a news topic are drawn
together for the sake of space and coherence. In structure, the composite story may
resemble that of a follow-up story (a story that takes off from previous news reports
and looks at the story from another angle, another source, or simply updates the
reader with the development of the story) in that both of them aim to consolidate
component parts. However, they differ in the sense that the follow-up story ends in a
tie-in with a past story; whereas, the composite story is composed of units, each one
made up of fresh spot news frequently with reference to the future.
S
In writing the composite
u story, include all of the features in a comprehensive lead
in the order which they mare in the lead. In doing this, relegate less important details of
each feature to less m Limportant positions. But remember that each chain of facts
ar
although covered separately should be handled as a single, unified story.

OSMENA HIGH JOINS ANTI-CRIME DRIVE

Osmena High School has joined the anti-crime drive launched by the
Peace and Order Council of the city government.
The staff of The New Horizons joined a rally called by the Editor’s
Guild of the Division of City Schools, Manila; the Student Council
organized a local peace assembly; and the Hi-Y Organization launched
an anti-smut campaign.
The student editors marched to Liwasang Bonifacio to denounce the
police department for “being unmindful of the schools’ security from bad
elements molesting students.”
The Student Council, supported by 20 presidents of homeroom
organizations surveyed the community for the possible existence of dope
pushers, extortionists, and vandals.
The Hi-Yers, on the other hand, launched an anti-smut campaign and
burned pornographic literature and obscene pictures which they
confiscated from students.
“Different kinds of crimes are being perpetrated right under the very
noses of policemen, but they seem to blind to all of these,” said the
editors.
“Dope pushers invade school premises; extortionists waylay students
in the streets, and vandals destroy school property,” lamented the student
leaders.
“Instead of reading their books and studying their lessons, many
students read dirty literature from magazines bought from nearby stores,”
complained the Hi-Yers.
Meanwhile, the student editors decided to write a pooled editorial to be
published on their respective school organs to denounce the “inefficiency
of the police in curbing theft, pickpocketing and snatching which have
become rampant” in schools, especially in the university belt.
The Student Council planned to hold a symposium on crime
prevention while the Hi-Y organization, a seminar on leadership training.
