TITLE : PERIODIC TABLE
INSTRUCTIONS:
The assignment consists of
PART A : 10 objective questions
PART B: 2 structured questions
PART C: design wakelet collection
Summit your assignment through portal together with the cover provided. Students will be
penalised on plagiarism, imitation and overdue submission.
DUE DATE : 23TH OCTOBER 2020

PART B : STRUCTURED QUESTIONS

Answer all questions.

1. a) The periodic table of elements is the organised array of all the chemical elements in order of
increasing proton number. Elements are positioned in period, group and block. FIGURE 1 shows
the position of elements A to G in the periodic table.

FIGURE 1

i. Describe period and group.

ii. State the block for each of the elements.

iii. Write the electronic configuration for elements E and G. [5 marks]

1
b) TABLE 1 shows the period and group for carbon, sodium, phosphorus and sulphur in the
periodic table.

TABLE 1

Element Period Group

Carbon 2 14
Sodium 3 1
Phosphorus 3 15
Sulphur 3 16

i. Two stable ions of the above elements are isoelectronic with argon. State the formula of the
ions. Explain.

ii. Compare the radius of the ions in (i). Explain [5 marks]

2a) TABLE 2 shows the successive ionisation energies, IE for elements X, Y and Z.
X is in period 2, Y and Z are in period 3 of the periodic table.

TABLE 2

Element Ionisation Energy, IE (kJ mol-1)

IE1 IE2 IE3 IE4 IE5 IE6 IE7 IE8
X 1314 3388 5300 7469 11000 13300 71300 84000
Y 496 4562 6910 9543 13354 16613 20117 25500
Z 999 2252 3357 4556 7004 8496 27107 31719

i. State the elements which are in the same group. Explain.

i. Determine the group for element Y and write its electronic configuration.

iii. State whether IE1 of element X is greater or less than IE1 of nitrogen. [5 marks]

b) Write the formula of the oxides of period 3 elements. Explain the acid-base character for each of
the oxides using suitable chemical equation.
[5 marks]
