Movement I – The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship

2. Describe the mood of this movement. How is this achieved?

In the beginning, the music is very bold and dark to represent the sultan but then it gets
lighter and more smooth to represent the waves of the ocean. Around the five-minute
mark, the music feels more bold and dark, but also grand. This could signify the ship
sailing through larger and more dangerous waves but continuing to stay strong through
every uncertainty. Then, at the end of this movement, the music has a very reflective tone
that could signify returning back to land at the end of the voyage.
3. Describe the color and character of the flute solos during this movement.
The flute solo is very light and carefree. To me, this resembles the birds that one can see
flying over the ocean.
4. Describe the color and character of the oboe solos during this movement.
The oboe solo is also very carefree but slightly darker than the flute solos. This makes me
imagine the smaller fish that swim alongside the ship and sometimes leap out of the
water.
5. Describe the color and character of the clarinet solos during this movement.
The violin solos move quickly up and down the scale. This could resemble fish or
dolphins swimming through the water, occasionally leaping out near the ship.
Movement II – The Narrative of Prince Kalandar

6. Describe the color and character of the bassoon solo.

This movement is about a prince that disguises himself as a beggar. The bassoon seems to
represent the prince wandering through the streets, taking in all the sights around him as
well as the prince getting into trouble along his journey.
7. List the order of the four woodwind solos at mm. 328-344.
There are no measure numbers in the video and most of the other link are inaccessible so
I’m guessing that this begins after the bassoon solo around 18-19 minutes into the piece.
If this is the case, the order is Oboe, Flute, Clarinet, then Bassoon.

Movement III – The Young Prince and the Young Princess

8. Describe the mood of this movement. How do the clarinet (mm. 20) and flute solos (mm.44)
help to contribute to the overall mood?
The third movement is much more tender and mesmerizing than the last two. This
portrays the love shared between the young prince and the young princess. The clarinet
and flute solos contribute to this by putting forth an image of their love, personified with
mesmerizing beauty, that is blossoming into fruition.
9. Describe the color and character of the clarinet solo at mm.70.
The clarinet solo is very light and bouncy. It resembles a dance between two young
people. This directly reflects the young prince and princess as they fall more deeply in
love with each other.

Movement IV – Festival in Baghdad, The Sea, Conclusion

10. Describe the mood at the end of this piece. How is this achieved? What role do the
woodwind instruments play in achieving this effect?
This movement begins with a dark and heavy tone to symbolize the sultan but then
features a beautiful violin solo to symbolize Scheherazade. The music then launches into
a grand but frantic tangent, most likely to represent another story Scheherazade tells the
sultan. This story sounds like it could be about a large party, gathering, or festival with
many things going on all at once. Then, the story switches back to an ocean setting with a
ship sailing across treacherous waves and ultimately succumbing to the dangers of nature.
Finally, the storm subsides, and the music ends with a beautiful mix of the themes of
Scheherazade and the sultan with the violin (symbolizing Scheherazade) plays a very
high note to show her success in surviving the sultan.
