Galaxy Toolbox
Galaxy Toolbox is the first ever toolbox designed for Wonderware System Platform. Conceived from the outset to
simplify common tasks, Galaxy Toolbox will help you to develop applications faster.
Simple to install, it seamlessly integrates powerful new features into the IDE.
While the built-in search facility does allow you to search for some of these cases, Galaxy Toolbox status view is
the right tool for the job.
Have you ever wished you could build screens, objects and even templates, by simply importing an AutoCAD
drawing directly into an ArchestrA application?
Now, with Galaxy Toolbox GBI tool, AutoCAD blocks are directly mapped to graphic instances and objects. With
just a few clicks an application can be mostly generated.
You can even substitute blocks ‘on the fly’ with standard symbols already in your Galaxy, populating custom
properties and UDAs automatically with data embedded in your DWG file.
How about building screens with your favorite graphic editing tool? Using the XAML Import feature of the
Galaxy Toolbox GBI tool you can import graphics created in any editor that can export XAML files ; using
the SVG Import feature of the Galaxy Toolbox GBI tool you can import SVG graphics ; using the WMF/EMF
Import, you can import WMF or EMF files.

Product registration
The Galaxy Toolbox tool is protected by license. A license key can be purchased from Software Toolbox. You
will receive a license number. You will need to register the license you receive to your computer in order to
activate the software. Registration can be done directly on the computer the software is installed on, provided it
has internet access. If the computer the software is installed on does not have internet access you will need another
computer with internet access to register your software and retrieve an activation code.
When you first open the IDE after installation, you will see the product is not yet registered. If you don't provide a
valid key the tool will be visible in the IDE but some features will be disabled.
The same registration tool is opened from both location. You can run the registration tool at any time. It is located
at
C:\Program Files[(x86)]\Common Files\code 192\GalaxyToolbox\License
\LicenseManager.exe
You will need to run the registration tool from the above location if you wish to upgrade a registration. One
example of when this will be necessary is when you wish to replace your evaluation license with a full license.
When the registration pop-up appears, select the product you wish to register and click Register
Enter the license number you received from Software Toolbox and choose either Manual or Online registration.
To register online the computer must be connected to the internet. Click Register to proceed to the next step

AutoCAD Import
This section will explain how to open .DWG files, configure blocks, select Layouts and associated layers and run
the import process.
System requirement
ArchestrA 4.0 version or higher must be installed on the computer where Galaxy Toolbox AutoCAD Import is to
be installed, with minimum screen resolution 1024x768 pixels.
Drawing Limitations
AutoCAD drawings from 2010 are supported. Older drawing usually work.
It is possible to build drawings that make life difficult for the tool.
Some examples are:
• Very small features (small relative to the largest dimensions of the layer)
• 3D drawings
• 2D drawing not drawn on the XY plane.
• Drawings that have filled areas built with lots of lines.
• Adding attributes to blocks with duplicate names
Introduction
[code192] has developed an add-in feature to the Wonderware System Platform (WSP) IDE that allows the import
of AutoCAD® DWG files.
• Import what you can see in an AutoCAD Layout as scalable ArchestrA graphics.
• Extract relevant data from Blocks.
• Customize instances of templates or symbols with extracted block data. Where necessary create new templates
on which to base those instances.
This is achieved by
• Creating object models in the Galaxy, containing ArchestrA Graphics
• ArchestrA Graphics are contained in the Graphic Toolbox or in Object Templates
• Each imported Layout is an assembly of layers as embedded symbols
1. Scaling
An AutoCAD file has no absolute coordinates, it is purely vectorial. For this reason, we need to have a scaling
step that converts the unitless dimensions of AutoCAD to pixels and scales the imported entities to a usable size.
2. Block Creation
- The AutoCAD blocks are analyzed in order to create ArchestrA Graphics.
- Created blocks (symbols) have a resolution of 256x256 pixels.
- They are grouped in a Blocks folder in the Graphics Toolbox.
4. Layout Creation
- The chosen layout is created by aggregating the selected layers as embedded symbols.
3. Layer Creation
- All graphical elements are created (lines, text, shapes…)
- All AutoCAD ‘inserts’ (graphical instances) are implemented as embedded symbols (either symbols from the
Grapic Toolbox or from object Templates)
- Each layer is embedded as a symbol or symbols (where one symbol is too complex).
AutoCAD is a software application for 2D and 3D computer aided design (CAD) and drafting developed and
marketed by Autodesk, Inc.
The file format generated is named ‘DWG’.
• Layouts : Represents a paper space. Put simply, a layout is a page that allows you to set up a plot or print of
your drawing. You can create as many layouts as you need in AutoCAD. Each layout is saved on its own layout
tab and can be associated with a different page setup.
Below is a visual representation of a layout for a print to be plotted from a Layout tab.
• Layers are a way of managing, tidying and also controlling the visual layout of a drawing. An arrangement in
paper space of sheet elements, typically including a border, title block, general notes, and a display of items
drawn in model space.
• Blocks are equivalent to graphical object models. They contain graphical definition and attributes. The
blocks' ‘instances’ are called ‘inserts’. Blocks can also contain non-graphical information. This means text
objects called attributes. A well designed drawing can contain attributes needed to automatically build objects
instances, such as engineering units, ranges, and even PLC addresses.
Getting Started
This section contains quick tutorials to help you start working with AutoCAD Import. It contains steps and
explanations on how to control the import of an AutoCAD drawing.
There are two ways to open the AutoCAD Import tool - embedded mode and external mode:
Embedded Mode
From the ArchestrA IDE: go to Galaxy -> Import -> From -> AutoCAD.
By selecting AutoCAD you have already completed Step 1 of the import process. Launching from the
IDE tells the tool that the target is the current galaxy. All that is missing is the AutoCAD file. A file open
dialog box appears.
Select the DWG file to import. Click Open to enter the tool at Step 3, or Cancel to go back to the Connect Source and
Target (step 2).
• Click Open, the AutoCAD Import tool will start to Read and Open the selected .DWG file, and a process
box will appear
If there are no errors reading the AutoCAD File the Configuration Dialog (Import Settings) will appear
As we see on the screen, Source is not selected and Target is already connected. This is because the tool was
started in Embedded mode from the IDE. At the time the IDE was connected to galaxy Code192_GBIDemo.
To re-open the file open dialog box, click the icon in Source Connection.
After selecting source file, it is pre-processed then the tool moves to step3.
External Mode
From C:\Program Files (x86)\code192\GalaxyToolbox\Graphics Bulk Import
run code192.GraphicsBulkImport.exe
AutoCAD is selected by default, so click Connect Source and Target or the arrow to advance to step 2
Select the DWG file to import. Click Open select the file.
Choose the Galaxy and click the check to connect to the Galaxy and advance to Step 3
Import Settings
This section is a tutorial on how to select and configure Blocks, select Layouts and associated Layers.

Explanation of all the functionality and all different cases
1. If Graphic does not exist in the Galaxy it will be created from AutoCAD.
• Ask - During the import a popup will ask the user whether to replace the existing graphic or rename the new one.
• Replace - Graphic in the Galaxy will be replaced with graphic from the AutoCAD file.
• Rename - Graphic in the Galaxy will not be effected. The graphic to be imported will have a suffix added to its name to
avoid a conflict
•
Skip - Graphic from AutoCAD won't replace existing graphic in the Galaxy. The selected Layers for that Layout will still
be imported (unless they are also set to skip)
Note: The yellow background indicates that graphic already exist in the galaxy
Blocks
Expanding the Blocks shows the proposed instance names
Note: Blocks are un-named in AutoCAD, but they may have ‘name’ attributes associated with the blocks. The green
background indicates that there is currently nothing matching found in the galaxy. Above are examples of how the tool
applies default names. To change these names see Tagname Rule
Select a Block
The GalaxyBindingEditor on the right changes context to the selected block, displaying graphic preview, status,
Attributes and Tagname rule as shown;
• ArchestrA Symbols or
• ArchestrA Objects
It is important to understand the difference as correctly choosing will allow you to effectively leverage the engineering time
already invested in your AutoCAD drawings.
ArchestrA Symbols
When blocks are imported as Symbols, one symbol is creates in the Graphic Toolbox for each block type (see 1 below). This
symbol is pasted multiple times in the layer symbols (3 below). The properties of these symbols (4 below) show that the
symbols have no owning object.
ArchestrA Objects
When blocks are imported as Objects, the symbols is created in a Template object. Multiple objects are instantiated from
the template (see 2 below). Each object inherits this symbol and these inherited symbols are pasted in the layer symbols (3
below). The properties of these symbols (5 below) show that they each have a different owning object.
Graphic Preview
In the Graphic Preview, using the browser, the import target for the selected Block can be a symbol from the symbol
toolbox, a symbol in a template or, if nothing is selected, the Graphic will be created from AutoCAD. The form of the name
will determine the binding and what is created.
If the destination does not exist the the action looks like this:
Note: The color of selected Block changes depending on the selected action
• ASK-Blue
• REPLACE-Yellow
• RENAME- Orange
• SKIP-Grey
Insert Destinations
• Binding to symbols that already exist in the Galaxy. You can enter the binding destination or use the browser
Click . The Galaxy Browser appears, select a symbol from the Symbol Library or from a Template
• Allowing the tool to create new symbols in the Galaxy and binding to them. In this case there is nothing to browse to, so
the binding destination must be entered as text. The template and symbol may not exist or just the symbol.
1. To bind to a Symbol enter the name of the new symbol. The name must not begin with a $ and must not contain
dots. It can consist of alphanumeric characters and '$', '#' or '_'
2. To bind to a Symbol in a Template, enter '$TemplateName.SymbolName'. There must be a $ at the start to
indicate a template name and there must be one and only one dot to delimit the template name from the symbol
name
3. Press TAB. The tool will validate the name you have entered. If you start with a '$' but don't have a dot then the
'$' will be removed and your entry treated as a symbol name. If the tool corrects an invalid entry it will highlight
the entry in yellow
Insert Alignment
When using a symbol that exists in the galaxy, there is usually a difference between the size and shape of the symbol in the
AutoCAD file and the one in the Galaxy. Use the following selections to determine how the import process must deal with
this.
Horizontal Alignment
Horizontal alignment controls how the width of the ArchestrA symbol is modified when it is pasted into a layer.
• Automatic: If Block and ArchestrA Symbol have the same name, Automatic works the same as Stretch, otherwise it
behaves like Center
• Left: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the left side of the
AutoCAD insert bounds
• Centre: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the center of the
AutoCAD insert bounds
• Right: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the right side of the
AutoCAD insert bounds
• Stretch The ArchestrA symbol is resized so that its width is the same as the AutoCAD insert.
Vertical Alignment
Vertical alignment controls how the height of the ArchestrA symbol is modified when it is pasted into a layer.
• Automatic: If Block and ArchestrA Symbol have the same name, Automatic works the same as Stretch, otherwise it
behaves like Center
• Top: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the top of the AutoCAD
insert bounds
• Centre: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the center of the
AutoCAD insert bounds
• Bottom: The ArchestrA symbol width is not resized. The ArchestrA symbol is aligned with the bottom of the
AutoCAD insert bounds
• Stretch The ArchestrA symbol is resized so that its height is the same as the AutoCAD insert.
Tagname Rule
By default each symbol, or object instance is given a name consisting of an underscore, the name of the block it was derived
from and a sequential number.
It is possible to form from simple to quite complex rules as to how to generate meaningful names. These names are applied
to the symbols when they are pasted into layer symbols. The names are also used to name ArchestrA objects if the block has
been bound to a template.
The dropdown menu allows you to use block's attributes to form the instances name
You can concatenate several fields, including static data. You can also use rules to extract only some characters from a field.
For every chosen name, the Preview is shown.
To change a filed from and attribute to static, click on the tag icon to the left of Attribute
To change the order of parts of the rule, simply drag them up or down the list
Instance Attributes
One the Tagname Rule is defined, the proposed instances have there proposed names
By Clicking on an Instance, we have list of all associated Attributes, Original and the one to be exported. Unless the original
value violates an ArchestrA rule, the Exported Value will be the same as the original value
Attributes
The Value definition allows different attributes from the AutoCAD file to be combined or modified. By default each
attribute is mapped unmodified. A rule can be created for each attribute in the same way that tagname rules are created.
• Custom Property: When the symbol is pasted into the layer symbol, the default custom property will be overridden
with the value from AutoCAD
• Attribute: This is only available when inserts are imported as ArchestrA objects. The attribute can be a
UDA, a Field Attribute or any other writable attribute.
The Attribute is the name of the destination custom property/ UDA / Field attribute etc.
Custom Properties or Attributes will be created if they don't already exist, provided the action in the Graphic panel is
Replace or New (or Ask and when asked you choose replace). The link icon shows if they exist already or not.
The attribute can be typed in or browsed to. Obviously if you want to create something that does not exist you will need to
type it in. If you simply wish to type instead of browse, pressing TAB or clicking somewhere else will validate what you
typed.
Layers
For the Chosen Layout there may be several associated Layers. There are several use cases depending on the Status:
1. If selected Layers does not exist in the galaxy, we can only select or unselect the Layers as shown, and the choice
will be previewed.
Note: Un-checked Layer will change color to Grey and won't be imported
• Ask - During the import a popup will ask the user whether to replace the existing graphic or rename the new one.
• Replace - Graphic in the Galaxy will be replaced with graphic from the AutoCAD file.
• Rename - Graphic in the Galaxy will not be effected. The graphic to be imported will have a suffix added to its name to
avoid a conflict
• Skip - Graphic from AutoCAD won't replace existing graphic. The color will be gray.
Note: The yellow background indicates that graphic already exist in the galaxy and that, unless something changes, by
default, they will be replaced with the selected graphic from AutoCAD.
Save Configuration
All of the configuration done in the Import Settings page can be saved.
Click to save configuration
Click Save
A typical Save dialog appears. Enter a filename and click Save
It is a good idea to save before running the import. This allows you to run the same import again later
Click Open
A typical Open dialog appears. Select the required file and click Open
Import
This is where the import is previewed, run, and the results appear.
Import Preview
When you enter this page a preview like this is show. It displays what will happen.
Start Import
The import is started by clicking this icon
Before the import begins, a check is run to see if anything has changed in the galaxy.
Press OK. The preview updates and it is necessary to click the start icon again.
This gives you the opportunity to check that the proposed import is still acceptable.
This is necessary in order to correctly scale the AutoCAD graphics to fit into ArchestrA graphics.
Ask Action
If during the Block configuration, Action: Ask was selected, the User will be prompted to choose the action while
processing
The popup will appear
Since the symbol already exist in the Galaxy and we have two choices:
1. Replace - click Yes
2. Generate a new name - click No
Rename Action
Strings in graphics can be substituted during the import. This can be a very useful and powerful tool.
Static data stored in UDAs or custom properties is only visible at runtime, and in the case of UDAs requires communication
between object and symbol, which effects screen opening time.
It is possible for a developer to perform a string substitution (CTRL+L in InTouch or the IDE) and 'hard code' strings (labels,
units etc) onto each symbol as screens are built, but this is tedious and error prone.
The tool can do this work for you as blocks are pasted.
When a layer is being generated, if the tool detects text in a symbol being pasted the following popup appears.
The popup allows the user to create a rule to set strings on each instance.
If normal animations are used leave the checkboxes unchecked.
Check the ‘Apply the settings to the following symbols of the same type’ checkbox. This
Click OK to continue.
The import continues
You can provide this data for every symbol (by not checking the check-box at the bottom).
After the import; if you open the import you will see the replaced text at design time. This can be very useful to help a
developer quickly locate a specific instance.
Results
When the import is complete the following popup appears
XAML Import
This section will explain how to open .XAML files and run the import process

Getting Started
This section contains quick tutorials to help you start working with WMF/EMF Import. It contains steps and
explanations on how to import a WMF or EMF file.
Embedded Mode
From the ArchestrA IDE: go to Galaxy -> Import -> From -> WMF/EMF.
By selecting WMF/EMF you have already completed Step 1 of the import process. Launching from the
IDE tells the tool that the target is the current galaxy. All that is missing is the WMF or EMF file. A file
open dialog box appears.
Select the WMF or EMF file to import. Click Open to enter the tool at Step 3, or Cancel to go back to the Connect Source
and Target (step 2).
• Click Open, the WMF/EMF Import tool will start to Read and Open the selected .WMF or .EMF file,
and a process box will appear
If there are no errors reading the WMF or EMF File the Configuration Dialog (Import Settings) will
appear
As we see on the screen, Source is not selected and Target is already connected. This is because the tool was
started in Embedded mode from the IDE. At the time the IDE was connected to galaxy GBI_Test.
To re-open the file open dialog box, click the icon in Source Connection.
After selecting source file, it is pre-processed then the tool moves to step3.
External Mode
From C:\Program Files (x86)\code192\GalaxyToolbox\Graphics Bulk Import
run code192.GraphicsBulkImport.exe
AutoCAD is selected by default, so click WMF/EMF to change to WMF/EMF mode and advance to step 2*
Select the WMF or EMF file to import. Click Open select the file.
Choose the Galaxy and click the check to connect to the Galaxy and advance to Step 3
