Driving in Fog

Driving in heavy fog is extremely dangerous due to severely reduced visibility. When visibility drops below 200 meters, it is considered foggy. Fog thickness can change quickly so drivers must take precautions. These include turning off high beams, using fog lights, braking lightly to activate brake lights, watching speed, avoiding changing lanes, and establishing contact with other vehicles. If visibility is very poor, it may be best to postpone driving until the fog lifts.

DRIVING IN FOG

Fog is statistically the most dangerous driving hazard in existence. Driving in heavy fog is like driving with
a blindfold on. Generally, visibility of less than 200 meters is classed as fog. Fog thickness can be patchy
and change from light mist to thick blanket in an instant. Take the following measures when driving on the
construction site:

See and Be Seen:

By oncoming traffic:
Turn off high beams- they direct light up into the fog
and create a ‘white wall’ effect.

Use dipped headlights/low beams- they direct light

down onto the road. Use fog lights in heavy fog.

By drivers behind you:

Activate your brake lights by lightly braking.

Do not use high-intensity rear fog-lights in light fog

Be aware of traffic around you:

Check your mirrors

Activate windshield wipers and demisters

Open windows partly to hear traffic

Watch out for cars without lights on.

Watch your Speed:

Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion
when you may actually be speeding.

Some drivers unconsciously increase their

speed over time in foggy conditions.

If you cannot see 3 car lengths ahead reduce

speed to less than 20mph.

Drive Safe:
Avoid switching traffic lanes.

Establish contact with trucks and heavy equipment who

have very limited visibility.

Consider postponing your trip until the fog lifts.

If you cannot continue, park your car a good distance away

from the road and move away
from the car.
