equipment with the minimum of
dismantling and without need
for temporary supports.

Where two or more pipes are to

be carried by a single support,
f.
the support spacing shall be for
the shorter interval.

Hangers for insulated chilled

and cooling water piping shall
be provided with hardwood or
high density rigid foam
g.
insulation inserts, reinforced
where necessary, capable of
withstanding the clamp
compression.

Inserts shall be of insulation

thickness with extended shields
of galvanized sheet steel or
h. glass fibre reinforced plastics,
not less than 1 mm thickness,
with sealed joints to maintain
the vapour barrier.

10 Support Materials
Supports and hangers for steel
piping shall be ferrous. Those
for copper piping shall either be
non-ferrous, or have a liner to
a. prevent electrolytic action.
Supports and hangers for
chromium plated or stainless
steel piping shall be chromium
plated.
11 Electrical Trace Heating

12 Support Spacing

The maximum spacing for

a. piping supports shall be as per
indicated in the table below.
13 Drop Rod Sizes

The minimum support drop rod

a. diameters shall be as indicated
in the table below.

Proprietary Pipe Support

14
Systems

Support systems may be slotted

steel (insert) sections with
spring-loaded fixing retained in
a. the slot. Pipes up to DN 100
shall be suspended from, and
larger pipes supported by, cross
members of the frameworks.
Steelwork shall be hot-dip
b. galvanized after manufacture to
BS EN ISO 1461:2009

At anchor points. Junctions and

changes of pipe direction, the
c. frameworks shall be braced to
accommodate all loads and
forces imposed by the piping.
15 Sliding Supports

Steel piping DN250 and above

in trenches, shall be carried on
a.
supports to BS 3974-1, Section
6, Fig.16 spaces as tabulated.

Supports shall also have a

2.1 PIPEWORK

a. Pipe

1 General Requirements

All pipework and associated

pipeline equipment and fittings
shall have the appropriate
a.
temperature and pressure rating
for the system in which it is
operating.

All fittings and pipeline

equipment shall be installed in
b.
accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions.
All materials used in connection
hot and domestic water systems
c. shall be listed in the Water
Research Centre 'Water Fittings
and Materials Directory'.

All pipework material and

systems (i.e. copper tube etc.)
d.
shall be supplied by a single
manufacturer.

At junctions between copper

tube and galvanized steel pipe
a separating dielectric shall be
e.
used to prevent direct contact
and consequent electrolytic
action.

Every water system shall be

tested, flushed and where
f.
necessary disinfected before it
is first used

2 Pipe Storage

Stored pipe shall be supported

a. clear of the ground on stable
secure pipe racks.

No pipe or other material shall

be placed inside another pipe or
b.
fitting if any lining or coating has
been applied to either.

Plastics pipe and components,

and rubber or compound
c. gaskets or sleeves shall be
stored in a cool area protected
from direct sunlight.
13 Drop Rod Sizes

The minimum support drop rod

a. diameters shall be as indicated
in the table below.

Proprietary Pipe Support

14
Systems

Additional test samples may be

h.
required from any welder.

6 Acceptability of Workmanship

All materials used shall be of

adequate quality and in full
a
compliance with relevant
Specifications.

The standards of acceptability

applicable to defects located by
visual inspection or NDT
b techniques of the completed
weld shall comply with BS 2971:
1991 or BS 2640 dependent
upon process.

7 Inspection and Tests

100% visual inspection of weld

preparation and completed
a
welds shall be to BS EN ISO
17637:2016.
Inspection shall be to BS EN
ISO 3923-1:2018 for ultrasonic
inspection and to BS EN ISO
17636-1:2013, BS EN ISO
17636-2: 2013 for radiographic
inspection and be carried out by
b
a member firm of the
Associated Offices Technical
Committee (AOTC). Personnel
shall be certificated under the
Personnel Certification in NDT
(PCN) Scheme.

5% of the total number of welds

in the installation in pipe of 6mm
to 10mm wall thickness, and
c 10% for thicknesses greater
than 10mm shall be randomly
selected for ultrasonic
inspection.

10% of the total number of

welds in the installation shall be
d
subjected to radiographic
inspection, selected at random.

If welds are found to be

unsatisfactory, further tests
shall be carried out. In the event
e of persistent failure, the welding
personnel concerned shall not
be permitted to carry out any
further work.

Additional welds may be

inspected by an independent
authority, and any defects found
shall be repaired. Any additional
