Question:
Design a combined footing supporting one exterior and one interior column. An exterior 24x20in
column with D = 170kips, L = 130kips, and interior 25x25column with D = 250kips, L = 200Kips are to be
supported on a combined rectancgular footing whose outer end cannot protrude beyond the outer face of the
exterior column. The distance center to center of the columns is 18ft, and the allowable bearing pressure of
the soil is 5500psf. The bottom of the footing is 6ft below grade, and a surcharge of 120psf is specified on
the surface. Design the footing for f’c = 3500psi and fy = 60000psi

Solution:
Given information,
Column-1(Exterior) Column-2(interior)
Size = 24in × 20in Size = 25in × 25in
D.L. = 170kips D.L. = 250kips
L.L. = 130kips L.L. = 200kip

Allowable bearing pressure, qa = 5500psf = 5.5ksf

Depth of footing, Df = 6ft
Surcharge Load, S = 120psf = 0.12ksf
f′c = 3500psi = 3.5ksi, fy = 60000psi = 60ksi

Step-1: Calculate Required Footing Dimention.

Total unfactored force acting on footing is, P =(170+130)+(250+200) = 750kips and it is acting at 10.8ft
from center of left column as showen in the figure.

To maintain the equilibrium, total column load must be at the center of the footing, we need to double the
distance of the resultant force from the boundary to calculate length of the rectangular combined footing

Length of the rectangular combined footing, L = (2 × 11.8)ft = 23.6ft

So, we take 23.67ft (23′8")

Net bearing pressure = Allowable bearing pressure – [weight of fill (granular soil) + weight of footing +
surcharge load]
qnet = qa − (γavg Df + )
qnet = 5.5 − { 0.125 × 6 + 0.12} [γavg = Average unit weight of soil and concrete = 125psf = 0.125ksf]
qnet = 4.63ksf

Required footing area,

Unfactored Column Load 170 + 250 + (130 + 200)

Areq = = = 161.99ft2 ≈ 162ft2
Net Bearing Pressure 4.63
A 162
Width of the rectangular combined footing, B = req = = 6.86′ ≈ 7′
L 23.6

So, provided footing area = 7′ × 23′8"

Step-2: Illustrate Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram.

Factored Load,  = 1.2 × .  + 1.6 × . .

= 1.2 × 170 + 250 + 1.6 × 130 + 200
= 1032kips

We need to calculate the upward pressure cause by the factored column load;

Soil reaction, q = Factored Load ,P u

=
1032 = 6.23ksf
u Provided Footing Area 7×23.67

Footing can be considered as flat slab (like a concealed beam) loaded as shown in figure

Fig: SFD and BMD

Step-3: Calculate Thickness of Footing
Assume, effective depth of rectangular combined footing, d = 37.5in;
For punching shear
Left column dimensions are, b =24in, h = 20in and
Right column dimensions are, b =25in, h = 25in

Fig: Critical Zone of Punching Shear.

For Punching Shear,

Critical perimeter of Exterior Column, 0 = 2 × 42.75 + 57.5
= 143in
Now,
Nominal Shear Capacity, VcE = 4λ f′cb0Ed
3500
=4×1× × 143 × 37.5
1000
= 1269kip
Design Shear strength, ∅ VcE = 0.75 × 1269
= 951.75kips
Shear force acting on perimeter of critical zone,
Vu1 = Column Load – Soil Pressure within the critical zone
42.75×57.5
42.75×57.5 = 412 − × 6.23 = 305.65kips
Vu1 = 412− ×
12×12 12×12

Here, ∅ VcE > Vu1 so assumed value of effective depth is satisfactory.

For Beam Shear,

The SFD shows that the maximum shear force is 371.24kips. Critical section for beam shear is “d” distance
from outside of the interior column to the left.
37.5
Factored shear force acting on critical section, Vu2 = 371.24 − × 43.61 = 234.96kips
12

Nominal Shear Capacity, Vc = 2λ f′c Bd

3500
=2×1× × 7 × 12 × 37.5
1000
= 372.71kips
Design Shear Strength, ∅ Vc = 0.75 × 372.71 = 279.53kips
Design shear strength is larger than factored shear force ∅ Vc > Vu2.So, assumed effective depth is
sufficient.
Step-4: Calculate Longitudinal Reinforcing Steel Area.

Maximum bending moment from bending moment diagram, = 1534.59k-ft

Let, a = 10% of d (for slab) = 0.1d = 3.75in

Required steel area, As = M

a
1534 .59×12 = 9.57in2
y f (d− )

= 3.75
2 0.9×60×(37.5− 2 )

As f y 9.57×60
Check, a = = = 2.30"
0.85f′ c b 0.85×3.5×7×12

M 1534 .59×12
Again, As = a = 2.30 = 9.38in2
∅ fy (d− ) 0.9×60×(37.5− 2 )
2
Minimum Steel area,
3f′c 200
As(min ) = max⁡( bd , bd)
fy fy
3 3500 200
= × 7 × 12 × 37.5 , × 7 × 12 × 37.5)
60000 60000
max⁡(
= max⁡(9.32 , 10.5)
= 10.5in2
Required minimum reinforcement area has greater value than As.
So, provide 10.5in2reinforcements both in positive and negative moment zone.
Provide, 18#7bars

Step-5: Calculate development length.

7
d b= = 0.875in, ψ t = 1.3
8

ψe = 1 (Uncoated bar); λ = 1 (normal weight concrete);

Now,
fy ψtψe 60000 × 1.3 × 1
lb = db = × 0.875 = 57.68in = 4.81ft

20λ f c 20 × 1 × 3500

From the point of maximum moment, there is 9.44ft available length to the left and 14.23ft to the right. So,
there is sufficient space for the required development length.

Step-6: Calculate Transverse Reinforcement.

For interior column,
Effective width of transverse beam as shown in Figure
37.5 37.5
bt = 25 + + = 62.5in = 5.21ft
2 2
Column Load 620
Distributed load along the transverse direction is = = = 88.57k/ft
B 7
88.57×2.462
Moment about XY line shown in the figure, = 268k-ft =
2

As transverse reinforcement sits top of longitudinal reinforcement, d = 37.5-1 = 36.5in

Required steel area, As = M

a =
268×12
3.65
= 1.72in2 [Taking a = 0.1d]
y f (d− )

2 0.9×60×(36.5− 2 )

Minimum steel will govern the design,

3 f ′c 200
As(min ) = bd , bd)
max⁡( fy fy
3 3500 200
= × 5.21 × 12 × 36.5 , × 5.21 × 12 × 36.5)
60000 60000
max⁡(
= max⁡(6.75 , 7.61)
= 7.61in2

Provide, 13#7bars

For exterior column,

Effective width of transverse beam as shown in Figure
37.5
bt = 24 + = 42.75in = 3.56ft
2

There is no need to check reinforcement for associated moment because exterior column has less axial force
than interior column.
Minimum steel will govern the design,
3 f ′c 200
As(min ) = bd , bd)
max⁡( fy fy
3 3500 200
= × 3.56 × 12 × 36.5 , × 3.56 × 12 × 36.5)
60000 60000
max⁡(
= max⁡(4.61 , 5.20)
= 5.20in2

Provide, 9#7bars

Step-7: Reinforcement Detailing.
