Literature Review.
Facebook has brought a new era to the student’s life. We can’t think a single step
without social networking. Today Facebook is considered as one of the most
popular platforms for online social networking among youth, and - as many
researches show – university students. The purpose of this study is to assess the
impact of social networking sites i.e. Facebook on students’ academic
performance. After lot of studies by many researcher we can easily say that
Facebook indeed introduced some new features recently which are both
beneficial and worthy of use. They are quite up to date and life changing.
Facebook live is helping us to take several online classes by many famous teacher.
Pages or groups like 10 minutes school, Khan Academy or various informative
pages helps us in our educational purposes. This survey helped us to know the
new generation’s students point of view about using Facebook being an
impeccable study material for education, entertainment and communication
purposes. It enhance the relation between the teacher and student as well.

owned by Facebook Inc. It was ranked as the most used social networking service
worldwide by a January 2009 compete.com study.
Facebook also consists of individual profile, his/her social links, list of personal
interests, contact information, personal information, photos and various other
things. Through such sites, users can communicate and share with friends various
activities and also join groups of their interests, like pages, advertise
product/service. It also offers privacy settings wherein an individual can see only
the specific parts of profile. Users can also control the information viewed by
others through their privacy settings. Such websites generate huge revenue by
advertising and posting banner ads.
Asia stands at second position among the facebook users in the world having
183.9 millions of users having 4.7% penetration level. Facebook is very popular
social networking site among the college students. Several researches have
examined the effect of social media on the academic performance of the
students.
Students are a main community of Facebook users who spend long hours on the
social network, which has worried parents and educational authorities about their
academic performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on
Facebook, as a leisure activity, does not disturb their academic efforts, though
some evidence suggests that their grades decline after they join Facebook. In this
survey we have tried to communicate with some students of different universities
in order to find the authenticity of this. They were very much helpful in providing
us with their opinions on several questions. 5 students from 5 different
universities were asked some questions and they were told to give their point of
view on that.
And for starting this survey I want to start it from myself, Serajum Munera Shafa.
I’m a regular student of Bangladesh University of Professionals. I study BBA here.
So I use facebook daily in average 4:30 hour. And whenever I sit for study I keep
logged in my facebook. Because I need see the powerpoint slides provided my

teacher. I never miss any of the class because of it. And it doesn’t hinder the
capability to concentrate in the class or memorize anything. I think that facebook
helps me to communicate with more people and this improves my personal
relations too. And because of having wifi both university and home, I don’t have
to spend much money on facebook. I can communicate and gather information in
short time via facebook. I even find it easy to use all the facebook features. I use
facebook because many of my foreign cousin and friends or school/university
friends want me to use it for communicating with them. I finds facebook very
useful in his regular life as I gets all the necessary resources from there. It helps
me to communicate with my classmates and teachers as well. I get to know the
latest university updates from it. We can easily conduct our group studies here.
The cr’s also provide course content and recourses in facebook groups. And
sometimes it helps me to seek help from my classmates to do any homework.

My 3rd interviewee is Ayesha Akter Asha, she is currently doing her BBA in
University of Dhaka. She is an attentive student and never fails to submit any
assignment in time. She never misses any class. She actually uses facebook on
Night (7pm- 11:59 pm ). In average she uses facebook not more than 2 hours.
Sometimes she logged in her facebook while studying. She has wifi in home and
university. She thinks facebook deliver late technical support when it is needed.
She’s strongly disagrees that facebook is similar to other social networks. She can
use it to locate friends whom she haven’t been in touch with for a while, like
school friends. She can communicate and collect information via facebook. She
likes to join various girl’s group on facebook. Facebook helps to communicate
with her classmates. She gets her class routine and study material on her batch
group. At the time of group work she finds facebook group chat very useful.
My 4th interviewee is Umme hani Peata. She’s doing her hon’s on Economics in
East West University. Like everyone she has wifi in home and universities. But
she’s kind of addicted to facebook. She spends more than 8 hours on facebook.
For this sometimes she misses the morning classes and fails to have concentration
on class. She likes to post too many thinks on facebook, that’s why she finds it har
to take control over her relationship. But it helps to maintain her personal
relationships. Facebook enables her to communicate and share information with
people in short time. Her interactions with facebook is not clear and
understandable. She pays less attention to facebook features used by her friends.
She also claims that facebook doesn’t offer immediate technical support when it
is needed. And she says that facebook is differente than msn, mail, online forums
etc. She uses facebook for creating new friendship. She loves makeup and food
bloggers group on facebook. She likes to have chat with her friends on daily basis.
In EWU you can always knock up your teacher on facebook. So she finds it very
friendly. She gets many emergency news about classes and courses from
facebook group. As she misses some classes, so facebook helps her to do her
homework. She finds it useful when it is the matter of group task given by the
instructor.
My 5th interviewee is Sabiha Habib. She’s doing her BBA in United international
universities. She finds facebook very helpful because she is a active member of
6|Page
various club in her universities. Due to promotions of her fests, or clubs or
competitions she uses facebook regularly. Because we know now a days we can
reach many people without any kind of cost by using facebook. So she uses
facebook in average 3 hours a day. She has the normal ability to concentrate and
memorize her lesson. She never fails to submit any assignment in time. She never
misses the class. Sometimes she remains logged in while studying. She has wifi in
both home and university. That’s why she doesn’t have to spend much money on
it. Facebook allows her to communicate and share information with the peoplr in
short time. Facebook helps her to improves her personal relationships. She is
quite a slow learner. So she became facebook member slowly and for this she
took some time to interact with facebook clearly. Her friends and cousins
recommended it, that’s why she opened it. And now for curricular and
extracurricular purpose she has to use it daily. Facebook gives slow reply for her
help request. She can connect facebook anywhere. She gets the technical support
email from facebook, but it takes time to arrive. She found her old school friends
from facebook. She makes so many new friends from it. She likes to join any kind
of business club group or debaters group on facebook. The relationship with
classmates improves by using facebook. Because she can open up a group and can
have chat with classmates. And like every university in Dhaka now a days, almost
every updates regarding the courses and classes are provided into facebook
group. Because it’s an common platform for informing a selective group of
people. She thinks that facebook is an appropriate platform to exchange course
related information with other university students.
Facebook has revolutionized the way we interact with other people by making it
easy for us to connect and share things we like and to read about and know our
friends. It has made complex human interaction simpler; it made things that were
already there easier. It has simplified how we live our lives. Most recently,
OnlineEducation.net, an online database designed to inform current and
prospective students about education opportunities in the U.S., compiled amount
of research data on college students and their use of social media. The results
were inconclusive and mixed. 96 percent of college students use Facebook. 79
percent of students did not believe that multitasking in the way mentioned above
negatively affected their grades. 20 percent of students that use social media
7|Page
reported feeling connected to their institution; 75 percent of college students
reported wanting to collaborate online. However, if the student is using Facebook
to propel his or her knowledge, for example, by participating in a Facebook group
created by a professor for students of a particular class, than the social network
may have a positive influence on education and spark the student’s interest in
learning certain subject matter.
An important benefit seen in the statistics above is the ability of Facebook to
make college students feel socially connected, with a greater sense of community.
They are being connected with people of different mind sets and getting to know
various things. Past studies have shown that students who are active on Facebook
are more likely to participate in extra-curricular activities. Facebook is really
much being used in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi students like other students waste
their time on Facebook activities. They prefer Facebook activities on their
assignments and test preparation. Facebook addiction is not limited only to the
adults and youths even children are so much in number who uses Facebook.
Facebook has so many side effects that our students, as they may don’t know.
Using Facebook means you are allowing other users to search you easily and your
friends tag and bag you like an objects. Though it has some privacy measures but
those are not enough and those users who exactly don’t know how to control
their privacy. This survey helped us to know some students point of regarding
this. They were okay with such things as they want to share some of their daily
routine with their friends.
Wasting valuable time in facebook is injurious especially in student life. It is okay
to remain socially connected but spending major portion of your time may lead to
other problems. . Access of everything is bad, while using Facebook students
should keep in mind the time limit and other works and responsibilities which
hold more importance to their life than using Facebook.
Positive impacts are like Facebook and other social networking sites give shy
children a way to socialize which might otherwise be lacking altogether.
Hopefully, this virtual training ground can extend into actual face-to-face
interactions. There are many groups that students can join through online
platforms, that are related to their course of study, demographic, school,
environment and much more. Joining this group on Facebook and others will help
8|Page
the students to have access to quality information as at when needed. Students
can get to know each other better through social media networks. It helps to
bring together two or more people, where they can share their problem, which it
can get solve by their fellow colleagues. If a student’s finds out that he or she is
having a problem in a particular course, he or she can open up through chat and
finds a genius who can provide a solution to the problem.
Conclusion
In the end Facebook has both positive and negative impacts on students’
academic performance. Over use of anything causes danger. Somehow we all
know what is right for us and what is wrong for us during this student life.
Because we are not getting back this golden age in our life at any cost. Everyone
needs to know the fruitful way to use these social media. Facebook hampers the
personal relationships by over using. Somehow we have to know the differences
between the virtual life and the real life. So we should take facebook as a blessing
or importance tools in our academic purpose.
