Mathematical tools: Derivative of sin x, cos x, log x, xn, aax by ab- initio method and integration of
trigonometric and algebraic functions.

Physical world and measurement: fundamental and derived quantities along with units, definition of units,
dimensions of physical quantities, applications of dimensional analysis, limitation of dimensional analysis,
significant numbers.

Kinematics: basic definitions, equations of motion by calculus method, vector and scalar product along
with properties. Resolution of a vector, unit vector, laws of vector addition, projectile motion (time of flight,
Hmax, Range).

Force and laws of motion: Newton’s laws of motion, law of conservation of linear momentum and recoil
velocity of gun, laws of friction, advantages and disadvantages of friction, banking of roads.

Work energy and power: work done by a force, work energy theorem, potential energy of a spring,
gravitational potential energy, collision in one dimension.

Rigid body dynamics: center of mass of ring, disc and sphere. Torque, angular momentum and its
conservation, moment of inertia and its significance, parallel and perpendicular axes theorems, radius of
gyration, values of moment of inertia for various objects (for multiple choice), relation b/w torque and
angular momentum.

Gravitation: Kepler’s laws, Newton’s law of gravitation, variation of g with height and depth, escape
velocity, orbital velocity, inertial mass and gravitational mass.

Properties of bulk matter: Hooke’s law, young’s modulus of elasticity, pressure due to a fluid column,
Pascal’s law and its application, Bernoulli’s theorem, Reynold’s number, terminal velocity and Stoke’s law,
surface tension and surface energy, heat capacity, modes of heat transfer, law of conduction, Newton’s law
of cooling.

Thermodynamics: laws of thermodynamics, thermal equilibrium, internal energy, intensive and extensive
properties, reversible process, heat engine.

Kinetic theory of gases: kinetic theory of gas, root mean square velocity, pressure exerted by gas, degrees
of freedom, law of equipartition of energy, mean free path.

Waves and oscillations: S.H.M, displacement equation and energy, simple pendulum, standing waves in
string and organ pipe (modes of vibration), beats, resonance, Doppler effect.
