Reflective Journal Week 7
1. How do you think your work in early childhood education has affected your values and
morality?
My values and moral behavior have improved and strengthened since I began working in early
childhood education. I’ve learned how precious and formative the early years are for a growing
child. Their emotional and social development is sensitive and need careful consideration in
order for them to become confident learners and participate in society. Now, I strive to be a
positive role model, because I know as their teacher, I’m in a position of great influence and set
the tone in the class. Children are quite impressionable and vulnerable to adults in their
environment. I am aware I come to the class with an already set value and belief system that
has been shaped over time. It is my moral obligation to treat children equally with respect,
dignity, kindness, gentleness, and patience, as well as keeping them safe and healthy.
2. How has the Code influenced your thinking about what is right and wrong in working with
young children and their families?
Using the NAEYC Code has greatly influenced and guided my thinking about what is right and
wrong in working with young children and their families. The Code was developed putting the
overall well-being of a young child a priority. Young children rely on adults for supervision,
care, comfort, nutritional needs, protection, education, guidance, and family support. The
Code showed me appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. I learned there are specific ideals
and principles outlined for the ethical responsibility to children, families, as well as colleagues,
community, and society. Early childhood educators are obligated to conduct themselves
professionally and are mandated reporters of abuse and prevention. The work we do is
rewarding, but can become challenging and difficult at times. The Code gives me the
knowledge of what is right and wrong when working with children and their families. It has
become invaluable and helpful to resolve issues and dilemmas that arise.
3. What can you do to further your commitment to ethical practice Feeney & Freeman, 2018,
P. 120)?
To further my commitment to ethical practice I will maintain high standards of moral conduct
and integrity, behave professionally, and take my responsibility as an early childhood educator
seriously. Continue growing and learning about what is best for children. Use the NAEYC Code
of Conduct as a guide. Strive to develop positive relationships with children, families,
colleagues, community, and society that are cooperative and consistent with the values of
Code. Enforce and uphold program policies. Finally, look for resources and tools that will
strengthen ethical behavior.
