Batch - 12 - KoM Assignment Presentation

This document discusses chain drives and gyroscopes. It provides information on different types of chain drives including hoisting chains, conveyor chains, and power transmission chains. It also discusses advantages and disadvantages of chain drives as well as their applications. The document then discusses different types of gyroscopes including rotary gyroscopes, vibrating structure gyroscopes, and optical gyroscopes. It provides examples of their uses in aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, smartphones and drones.

Transmission Drives
Chain Drives

Power is transmitted from one

shaft to another by means of belts, Belt Drive Chain Drive Gear Drive
ropes, chains and gears.

Chain is regarded in between the gear

drive and the belt drive.
• Made of metal
• Occupy lesser space
• Constant velocity ratio
• Longer center distances
Sprockets:
• The wheels over which
chains are run.
• Surface of the
sprockets conform to
the type of chain used.

Classification of Chain Drives
Hoisting Chains Conveyor Chains Power – Transmission Chains
(i) Oval Link Chains: (i) Detachable Conveyor Chain: (i) Block Chain:
• Common type of chain used in hoist • Used when length of power • Used in low speed areas
• Also called coil chains. transmission is short. • Produce noise due to
• Oval in shape. But square also sudden contact between
available but kinking occurs. (ii) Closed-end Pintle Type Conveyor sprocket and chain.
• For low speeds. Chain:

(ii) Stud Link Chains: a single casting. • Rollers free to rotate inside
• Minimize the deformation and link • Heat-treated to provide higher bush, wear and tear

• Combination of stud and oval gives • Noise is minimized.
more strength to the chain.
(iii) Silent Chain:
Example: Anchor in ships. • Completely silent.
• Contains no roller.
• Lubrication is important.

Advantages Disadvantages
• Low maintenance. • The major disadvantages are here it requires more and
frequent lubrication otherwise rust problem comes.
• Greater efficiency up to 97 percent.
• It cannot be used where there is a requirement of slips.
• Slipping is negligible
• We can’t keep chain drive-in open. It needs housing or
• Chain drive can operate in wet conditions too. covering.
• It can withstand abrasive conditions. • It cannot be used for précised motion requirements.
• The chain drive is easy to install. • It is noisy and therefore there is a problem of vibration
• Initial tension is not required in chain drive. too.

• Chain drive requires less space and it is more compact • The installation or initial cost is more.
than belt drive. • The velocity fluctuation is more.
• Transmit higher power compared to belt drive.
• Chain drive, the speed ratio is good as compared to belt
drive. Applications
• It can be operated at a high temperature Like a belt which
cants not operate at high temperatures. • Chain drive used for transmission of power.
• It is used for lifting loads and also used to
carry material.
• This is also used in woodworking machinery.
• Transportation Industry.
• Agriculture Machinery.
• Material Handling Equipment.
• Building construction.

Gyroscope
• Device used for measuring or maintaining orientation
and angular velocity.

• It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation

(spin axis) is free to assume any orientation by itself.

smartphones

There are three basic types of gyroscope:

• Rotary (classical) Gyroscope.
• Vibrating Structure Gyroscope.
• Optical Gyroscope.

Rotary Gyroscope Vibrating Structure Gyroscope
• Consist of a spinning disk or mass on an axle, which is • The physical principle is that a vibrating object
mounted on a series of gimbals. tends to continue vibrating in the same plane
• Each gimbal offers the spinning disk an additional even if its support rotates.
degree of rotational freedom.
• The Coriolis effect causes the object to exert a

any net external torque on the gyroscope. force on its support, and by measuring this force
the rate of rotation can be determined.

6
Optical Gyroscopes ( Fibre - Optic Gyroscope)
• A Fibre-optic gyroscope (FOG) senses changes in
orientation using the Sagnac effect, thus performing the
function of a mechanical gyroscope.

• However its principle of operation is instead based on

the interference of light which has passed through a coil
of optical fibre, which can be as long as 5 kilometers (3
mi).

Applications
• Aircraft
• Cruise and Ballistic
missiles
• Spacecraft
• Smartphones
• Drones
