YOUR GOALS:
This lesson allows you to begin your journey into understanding the English language which will hopefully lead
you to mastering it. In this lesson, you must aim to:

a. observe the language of campaigns;

b. arrange parts of an advocacy letter; and

c. rewrite erroneous writings observing the language of research.

YOUR KEY

Campaigns
- are advertisements, sales promotion, public relations or meaningful socio-civic activities that aim to achieve action toward a
specific cause using various persuasive mechanisms
- it runs for a specific period of time and focuses on a specific target audience.
- it is not only exclusive to promotion of products and services to possible costumers
- it is also an exercise of speaking out and regulating a cause that people ardently believe in
- campaigns are drafted by people of influence from various fields and disciplines that contains their sentiments
on issues of great importance
- below are some of the steps you may consider in making a campaign speech:
 Immediately get your points across
 Presentation of theme must look easy and uncomplicated
 Add some comic relief
 Push the audience to side with you
 Milk your speech
 Create a good ending
Advocacy
- the concept of supporting a particular cause, principle, or policy than an individual or group would want to pursue or work on.
- it usually serves as a voice to alleviate and address concerns of the marginalized, downtrodden and the discriminated.
- advocacy groups are created to safeguard the rights of those who cannot defend themselves and to always look after their
best interest by representing them when the need arises.
- in producing an advocacy letter, essay, or speech, be reminded of the following:
 Be clear with you intention in supporting an advocacy.
 Research extensively on the advocacy that you would want to engage in.
 State the issue directly, but not forcefully, in your introductory paragraph
 The body of your letter or essay should encompass the background details of your cause.
 Present and acknowledge your sources by citing them.
 Conclude your writing by stirring the emotions of your readers.

- an academic type of writing which follows a formal and impersonal style and format.
- it does not use casual or conversational language
- it does not put emphasis on direct references to people and their emotions
- it involves accuracy, objectivity, clarity, and evidences to name a few
- the writer should be able to have a large and extensive vocabulary to concepts and constructs that are distinct to the topic he
is working on
- stated below are some of the common mistakes that should not be committed in any academic or scholarly writing
 Do not begin or end sentences in prepositions.
 Refrain from repeating words or expressions.
 Use commas effectively.
 Use punctuations in quotations correctly.
 Always write in complete sentence.
 Follow subject and verb agreement.
 Do not use superlatives and subjective statements.
 Avoid oversimplifying statements.
 Avoid trivial discussions.
 Pay attention to your word choice.

Dear Sen. Snowe,

We are writing to urge you to oppose the Family Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 1271). This bill, which was passed by the House of
Representatives in April 2011, would require minors to obtain parental permission before participating in surveys or studies that ask
them questions about psychological problems, sexual behavior or attitudes, or “illegal, antisocial or self-incriminating behavior.”

The Healthy Youth Coalition represents over 125 agencies serving troubled, runaway and homeless youth in New England, including
seven agencies in Maine alone. In Maine as elsewhere, these agencies are often the last stop for adolescents in crisis and/or on the
street. Among other things, these agencies provide emergency shelter; individual and family counseling; drug treatment and prevention;
and HIV education – services that teens and their families often can’t get anywhere else. These services are particularly important in
Maine, which has a higher-than-average rate of youth suicide and where an estimated 98% of homeless adolescents abuse alcohol and
other drugs or are at risk of doing so.

Homeless and troubled youth are particularly hard to study because they spend so much time on the streets, hiding even from those
who could help them the most. Youth-serving agencies rely heavily on the work of social scientists to track and study this transient,
vulnerable population. A law forbidding minors to participate in anonymous research studies would almost certainly reduce the amount
of information our member agencies could receive about the problems and needs of these youth.

The Family Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 1271) would seriously undermine youth agencies’ efforts to serve society’s most vulnerable
adolescents. In the interest of adolescents and their families, we ask that you vote against it.

WARM UP!
The Different Types of Writing/Text

An informative writing piece aims to educate and inform the readers in a clear and concise manner. This type of writing aims
to add new information, interpret, and discuss a particular process or establish or promote a concept.

A persuasive writing, on the other hand, does not aim to inform, but to convince and persuade the readers to believe in the
contentions the writer claims. Here, the development of logical and sufficient arguments and a unified summary are essential in enticing
the readers to side and believe what is being presented to them.

Lastly, an argumentative writing, is a piece of writing from which a writer investigates a topic by presenting a claim and
supporting that claim with relevant evidence. It is more like a debate on paper because the writer presents information about both sides
of the issue. Its goal is to have the readers accept the writer’s point of view or side of truth.

More and more countries and cities ban smoking here and there, in public places. According to various medical studies,
smoking not only causes various health problems for a person, but also for every nonsmoker close by. Even though people continue
debating the pros and cons of the smoking issue, the reality is that a ban is the most appropriate and logical decision in case of
smoking in public areas. Although there are some arguments on both sides, here are the solid reasons why the smoking ban is a must.

First of all, smoking, even outdoors, can cause various health problems, such as bronchial infections and asthmatic attacks
even in non-smokers. This point is particularly crucial for nearly one million US people who suffer from chronic sinusitis, asthma,
bronchial infections, and other conditions that have something to do with breathing.

Smoking hurts our environment. That’s a fact. In addition to the fact that smoking is harmful to you and your family members, it
actually hurts our ecosystem with all of its inhabitants. All the plastic filters, cigarette butts, and other elements of smoked cigarettes
tend to pollute waterways, soil, and beaches. The most recent lab studies prove that such toxic compounds of cigarettes as pesticide
residues and nicotine are harmful to fish and microorganisms.

In addition to some apparent damage being done by smoking, it is important to mention the cost of this dubious pleasure. The
point is that smoking is like a financial trap for every person addicted to nicotine. As reported by the CDC, the financial burden that
smoking puts on people keeps on rising, with nearly $193 billion spent yearly in the US.

One of the things that many young women are concerned about is aging. Ladies tend to check their mirrors in order to see if
they got new wrinkles and feel terrified when their doubts are confirmed. And this is the case when smoking should be mentioned as
well. The reality is that one of the most significant causes of premature aging is nicotine. People who smoke on a regular basis are
more likely to face early skin changes. As reported by the scientists of the American Academy of Dermatology, regular smoking causes
a range of biochemical changes that push the process of aging. For instance, if you’re a regular smoker, you contribute to depriving the
living skin tissue of precious oxygen. As a result, blood can’t reach your organs fast and easily.

In conclusion, it is clear from everything discussed above that smoking should be labeled illegal in all public places all over the
globe. As a result, this would improve the state of health of every person or animal, and that is more than enough.
