ScienceGrade11STEM LAS Earth-Science Q1Week4-5-1 PDF

Here are the key points from the scenario: 1. The children filled their swimming pool with water directly from their deep well faucet. 2. After swimming, their mother noticed redness on their backs and legs. Itchiness developed. 3. The barangay doctor diagnosed it as an allergic reaction caused by dirty water from their faucet. So the cause of the redness and itchiness was an allergic reaction to contaminants in the untreated deep well water they used to fill the swimming pool.

TOPIC: Geothermal and Hydroelectric Energy

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Explain how heat from inside the Earth (geothermal)
and from flowing water (hydroelectric) is tapped as a source of energy for
human use.

Activity No. 8
ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY

I.OBJECTIVE
1. Explain how geothermal and hydroelectric are used as sources of energy.

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

Renewable energy is a term used to refer to forms of energy that are
naturally obtained from the environment and from sources that can be
replenished naturally. This learning activity explains how heat from the Earth is
tapped as a source of energy for human use. It will help us to understand
different methods and processes to exploit heat and appreciate the
importance of heat from our planet.

TOPIC: Water Resources

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Identify the various water resources on Earth.

Activity No. 9
WATER RESOURCES

I.OBJECTIVE
1. Recognize how water is being distributed on Earth.
II. LESSON OVERVIEW
Water is known as the universal solvent that exist naturally. It can be found
around the globe in the form of gas, solid, and liquid. It is used every day by
man for bathing, drinking, cooking, washing, and others. Plants and animals
also used it for them to survive. In some scenario, it is being utilized to produce
electricity, means of transportation, and coolants on some engines. In other
words, water plays a vital role in making our lives very comfortable. But, do you
have any idea on the different resources of water and how water in our planet
is being distributed?
In this learning activity, you will learn about how Earth’s water is distributed
on the Earth’s surface and name some of the water resources. Are you excited
to learn more about water? Then, be ready to learn and accomplish the tasks
ahead.

TOPIC: Water Quality and Availability

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Explain how water activities affect the quality and
availability of water for human use.

Activity No. 10
WATER QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY

I.OBJECTIVE
1. Determine different activities affecting the quality and availability of water
for human use.
2. Enumerate various water resources for human consumption.

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

Water quality comprises the physical, chemical, and biological
characteristics of a water body. The bodies of water such as oceans, seas,
rivers, spring water and deep wells acquires these characteristics from a suite
complex interactions among the water found in the atmosphere, soils, and
lithology.
In this learning activity, you will learn about different activities affecting
both quality and quantity that would lead to the change of land use and land
cover, which changes the relative importance of processes that control water
quality for human consumption.

Directions: Read the scenario below and answer the guide questions that follow.

Summer has arrived and still Barrio Mapagpala is in ECQ (Enhanced

Community Quarantine) due to COVID-19 pandemic. Aaron, an incoming Grade
11 student, with his younger brothers, Caleb, a grade 7 student, and Jeremy, who
is a grade 6 student plan to get their body refresh so they decided to inflate a 1.2
m X 2.5 m swimming pool at their garage. They filled it with water directly from the
host of their faucet, a deepwell water from their subdivision. After having fun and
tired of splashing water, swimming around, their mother instructed them to get
out of the water because of some redness she have seen at their entire back
and legs. So immediately they run at their comfort room and washed their bodies
with beauty soap and shampoo. Afterwards, they rinse their body thoroughly with
clean water.
But itchiness starts to come in, so their mother put some talc powder at their
backs and legs but the redness and itchiness do not subside down. She brought
them to the Barangay Health Center and was given prescriptions by their
Barangay Doctor, Dr. Miguel Rivera, a dermatologist. He concluded that the
allergy started from the dirty water from their faucet. An anti- allergy tablets and
antibacterial soap and ointment were prescribed. They hurried to the nearest
pharmacy and get home immediately to relieve the itchiness . After they take
the medicine, they washed their bodies with anti-bacterial soap and put some
ointments to the infected areas. After few minutes, a sudden change in redness
to light red occurred and itchiness slowly disappeared.

Guide Questions:
1. What do you think is the cause of redness and itchiness of the entire backs of
the children?

2. Water sample from the faucet was taken to be examined in the laboratory
because 65 percent of the entire subdivision was also affected. What do you
think are the contents of water that made the residents experienced itchiness
and redness on their skin?

diameter of one (1) meter and with a depth of six(6)meters. They accidentally
discovered it when they played basketball with his cousins during the summer
vacation. They wanted to drink the water because it looks clean and cold and
besides, the basketball court is far from their Lolo’s house. If you were Aaron and
his cousins, what will you do to know if the water is really clean and safe for
drinking? What tests will you use to assure its quality?

IV. ANALYSIS
Directions: Read the given selection. Answer the questions that follow.
Soil helps sustain life on Earth-including our lives. It supports the growth of
plants, which in turn supply food for animals. Therefore, soil provides us with
nearly all the food we eat.
Besides supporting the growth of plants, soil plays other life sustaining
roles. It helps purify or clean water as it drains through the ground and into rivers,
lakes, and oceans.
The way people use land can affect the levels of nutrients and pollution in
soil. Any activity that exposes soil to wind and rain can lead to soil loss. Farming,
construction and development, and mining are among the main activities that
affect soil resources.

1.How does soil provide food for people?
