KEEP PARTS IN ORDER AS REMOVE

** Use service Manual and/ or ALLDATA to disassemble engine in proper sequence

** Do NOT throw away the oil lter

** Measure CRANKSHAFT ENDPLAY prior to removing any pistons, rod caps, and

main bearing caps. Record your reading on the CRANKSHAFT CLEARANCE &

PISTON MEASUREMENTS page in the workbook

END PLAY MEASUREMENT_________

** When removing Cylinder heads follow the head bolt removal sequence outline

in the service manual and/ or ALLDATA

*****TEAR DOWN TO A SHORT BLOCK****

** Mark all connecting rods and end caps prior to removal (if it has not already bee

done)

** When removing rod cap and piston assemblies, only remove one at a time and use

protective boots/ hose on the rod bolts in order to not damage the crankshaft

** Mark main bearing caps and block prior to removal

** Keep main bearings with the correct main cap. DO NOT mix them

JOURNAL MEASUREMENT

Use the drawings to help you determine where on the crankshaft journal to place the
micrometer to make the measurements

Measurements C&D are taken 90* from A&B

Measurements A&C are taken at one end of the journal and B&D are taken at the other
end of the journal

Measure the crankshaft main bearing journals ( the diameter) and record the
measurement below

1 A ____________ 2 A ____________ 3 A ____________ 4 A ____________

B ____________ B ____________ B ____________ B ____________

C ____________ C ____________ C ____________ C ____________

D ____________ D ____________ D ____________ C ____________

1. Crankshaft MAIN BEARING JOURNAL diameter spec.:______________ in

2. Using 0.001 inch as the maximum allowable taper, are any of the journals tapered
YES or N

3. If yes, how many and which one(s)?____________________________________

4. Using 0.001 inch as the maximum allowable out-of-round, are any of the journals
out-of-round YES or N

5. If yes, how many and which one(s)?____________________________________

6. Using the main bearing journal diameter speci cation, are the journals undersized

CONNECTING ROD BORE MEASUREMENT

Use the drawing to help you determine where to place the telescoping gauge to
make the measurements.

1. Place the connecting rod cap on the rod without the bearing insert installed in the
bore

2. Place the connecting rod assembly in a vise and torque the cap to speci cation
(Use blocks of wood between the vise jaws and the big end of the connecting rod
when clamping in the vise.

3. Measure the connecting rod bore and record the measurements below

1 A ____________ 2 A ____________ 3 A ____________ 4 A ____________

B ____________ B ____________ B ____________ B ____________

C ____________ C ____________ C ____________ C ____________

4. Connecting rod bore (housing bore) speci cation.: _______________________

5. Using 0.001 inch as the maximum allowable out-of-round, are any of the connecting
rod bores out of speci cation YES or N

6. If yes, which one(s)? _______________________
