 recognize textual aids in text; and
 identify textual aids in different forms.

What’s In

Do you still remember your lesson about various text types? Do you know that you
can use textual aids to help you understand these types of text?

Textual Aids refer to written texts, prints and some other way of writing for an
important word, graphs, or even pictures to stand out from the other.

What is a textual aid?

Textual Aids are tools or materials that provide support and facilitate understanding
of texts. Textual aids are educational instruments, which could be written texts, or
printed texts and other ways of emphasizing the essential phrases, thoughts, graphs,
and /or images.

These aids are, most of the time, graphical outlines or images that give a general idea
of a certain topic.

Simple examples of textual aids are those words being highlighted, set in boldface,
italicized, and added in charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, tables, etc.

Here’s an example of a textual aid in a text.

Republic Act No. 10627 or the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013

the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property;
creating a hostile environment at school for the other student; infringing on the rights
of another student at school; or materially and substantially disrupting the education
process or the orderly operation of a school; such as, but not limited to, the following:
1. Any unwanted physical contact between the bully and the victim like punching,
pushing, shoving, kicking, slapping, tickling, headlocks, inflicting school
pranks, teasing, fighting and the use of available objects as weapons;
2. Any act that causes damage to a victim’s psyche and/or emotional well-being;
3. Any slanderous statement or accusation that causes the victim undue
emotional distress like directing foul language or profanity at the target, name-
calling, tormenting, and commenting negativity on the victim’s looks, clothes,

The term shall also include any conduct resulting to harassment, intimidation,
or humiliation, through the use of other forms of technology, such as, but not

Lesson Organizing texts using Graphic

2 Organizers

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 identify the different types of graphic organizers and their uses; and
 use graphic organizers in organizing a text.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you learned that textual aids are tools or materials that
provide support and facilitate understanding of texts. These aids are, most of the
time, graphical outlines or images that gives a general idea of a certain topic.
Some of these textual aids are graphic organizers.

answer these questions.

 How is the text presented in the

 Is the illustration helpful in

understanding the text easily?

 In what ways do you organize

information?

Please consider changing this.)

The illustration above uses the idea wheel graphic organizer. A kind of graphic
organizer that works for brainstorming and organizing ideas at the same time.

Graphic Organizers are visual displays of key content information designed to benefit
learners who have difficulty organizing information. They are meant to help students
clearly visualize how ideas are organized within a text or surrounding a concept. They
provide students with a structure for abstract ideas.

Graphic organizers are also sometimes referred to as knowledge maps, concept maps,
story maps, cognitive organizers, advance organizers, or concept diagrams.

The table on the next page shows the different types and uses of graphic organizers.

DAY 3
Lesson
Reading Non-Linear Texts
3

12
What I Need to Know
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

 read non-linear text; and

 use non-linear text in understanding a text.

What’s In

Aside from the different types of graphic organizers we learned from the previous
lesson, textual aids can also be in the form of graphs, diagrams, charts and tables.
These illustrations are helpful tools in giving a general idea of a certain topic. They
are also called non-linear text.
1.

Clipart 2

What’s New
Study the picture and answer
these:
1. Based on your observation,
what information is shown in
the illustration?
2. How are the texts presented in
the picture?
3. In this way, is the general idea
still clear?
Image 3
The illustration above is called a bar graph. A bar graph is considered as a non-
linear text.

Non-linear texts are usually those writings with visuals, diagrams or an infographic
that interferes with the readers "reading path" (the way that text can be read
according to sequence and order).

13
A Non-linear text has a reading path where texts and visuals are combined. The
reading path of non-liner text is non-sequential wherein readers are good to start
wherever they want, such as pictures, graphs, tables etc. A perfect example of it is
encyclopedia, which highlights important subjects and makes everything easily
readable.

Types of Non-Linear Text

 Pie charts
Pie charts are visual representations of information on parts or segments as a
proportion, percentage, or fraction of the whole. One can clearly see that the
visual itself shows who or which segment has the bigger piece of the pie.

 Line Graph
Line graphs are commonly used to show trends. They are easy to read because
the reader can identify the trend based on the direction of the line.

 Bar Graph
Bar graphs consist of columns or bars arranged horizontally or vertically.
Normally, they are used to show comparison between variables. They are
also used to show the frequency of events in different classes or intervals.

14
 Table
Tables consist of facts and figures arranged in columns and rows for quick
reference. This will ease the understanding of complicated facts and figures.

 Infographic
An infographic (information graphic) is a visual representation of information
that aims to make the data easily understandable at a first glance.

 Histogram
A histogram divides sample values into many intervals and represents the
frequency of data values in each interval with a bar. A histogram works best
when the sample size is at least 20. However, a sample size that is
considerably greater than 20 may better represent the distribution.

15

student. Explain your answer.

A. PERFORMANCE TASK 1

Imagine yourself as a task force volunteer in your community. Your first task as
volunteer is to create an awareness campaign material about a clear presentation of
the Enhanced Community Protocol. You have decided to make a visual

infographic.

Your target is to help the community understand what they must do when they read
and remember the ECQ protocol.

Use an A4 size bond paper in completing the task.
