2. Conditions Specific to Remote Teaching and Assessment

1. All students are expected to have access to a computer with following capabilities:
a. reliable internet connection

4. All students are expected to do online, timed exams

a. Both midterm and final exams will be through Moodle Quiz using live-invigilation

 • That the exams will take place during the exam period at the designated date
and time set by the professor (midterm) or the Exams office (final). All exam
times will be set to Eastern Standard Time.
• That your image, voice and screen activity may be recorded throughout the
duration of the exam.
• That you must show your Concordia University Identification card to validate
your identity. Alternative government-issued photo identification will be
accepted, though it is not recommended. Only identification in English or
French will be accepted.
• That any recording made (if one is made) will only be viewed by authorized
university personnel (no external entity has authorization to review the
recording).
• That you will be responsible for ensuring appropriate, properly functioning
technology (webcam, a microphone, appropriate browser and an ability to
download any necessary software, as well as a reliable internet connection with
a minimum of a 3G connection).
• For your online examination(s), you will need to download the appropriate
browser lockdown technology and use Zoom. Protocols for entering the
examination will be provided by your professor.
• That you should enter the virtual test site and become familiar with the
software that will be used for your exam before starting the exam.
• That you will need a quiet place within which to take the exam. Earplugs or
noise-cancelling headphones that are not connected to a device may also be
used to allow you to focus for the duration of the exam.

b. Course instructor reserves the right to conduct an individual oral examination to

verify student’s response to online exam questions

3. Course Description

• This course is an introduction to quality management. Students will comprehend various

concepts in quality management and learn to apply them through lecture, discussion,
reading, and a team project (2~4 in each team). Students are required to use Microsoft
Excel for the project.

• Prerequisites: There is no prerequisite for this course. Basic knowledge in

probability/statistics and prior experience in using statistical package software will help.

4. Learning Outcomes

• By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Understand quality management concepts.
2. Apply quality control concepts and tools.

5. Schedule

• Week 1: Introduction: Basic concepts of quality management, Evolution of quality

management.
• Week 2: Basic Principles of Six Sigma, DMAIC, and DMADV.
• Week 3: Project organization, selection, and definition, Pareto analysis.
• Week 4: Measuring process, Process capability, Data collection.
• Week 5: Statistical analysis I: Probability distributions, Statistical inference.
• Week 6: Statistical analysis I: Hypothesis testing, ANOVA, Regression analysis.
• Week 7: Statistical analysis II and Statistical Process Control (SPC), Control charts¸
Process capability.
• Week 8: Designing experiments, products, and processes, Process simulation.
• Week 9: Quality tools for design: Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Failure Modes
and Effects Analysis (FMEA), robust design and reliability.
• Week 10: Qualitative analysis and process improvement techniques, Brainstorming and
affinity diagrams, introduction to theory of constraints, Lean engineering.
• Week 11: Implementing Six Sigma: ISO, ACE (Achieving quality excellence).
• Week 12: Other quality management approaches, philosophies, frameworks.
• Week 13: Summary and review, Projects presentation.

6. Course Materials

• An Introduction to Six Sigma & Process Improvement, by James R. Evans and William
M. Lindsay, Second Edition.

• All course materials will be posted on Moodle.

7. Assignments and Grading

1. Assignments: 40%
2. Project proposal: 10%
3. Project: 50%

• Failing Grade: Plagiarism, absenteeism, lack of preparation, and lack of effort will result in a failing
grade.
