1 Introduction
1.1 Preface
These operating instructions describe a transverse thruster consisting of a trans-
verse thrust tunnel, propeller and gearbox. A drive system is not covered by the
scope of these operating instructions. The scope of supply can differ from the
described transverse thruster depending on the order (see chapter 11 „Appen-
dix“ on page 57).

The following information must be observed when working with the transverse
thruster:
– The following section "Basic Safety Instructions" contains safety information
that must be applied as basic rules of behaviour when working with the
transverse thruster.
– The subsections "Special Safety Instructions" contain further safety instruc-
tions regarding the respective procedures in these operating instructions.
– Regarding the individual action requests warnings are contained in the text.
The warnings refer to the individual action instructions.

8 Motor foundation
Jastram delivers the propeller and the gearbox of the transverse thruster in a
tunnel section. The remaining part of the transverse thrust tunnel to the ship's
wall must be crafted by the client if necessary. In order to fasten the tunnel to
the ship structure, optional client-specific connections such as rings and plates
Version V2.3 Me 19
Layout and Function
are welded to the outside of the tunnel in addition to reinforcements in the pro-
peller and gearbox areas. The exact design is to be found in the drawings (see
chapter 11 „Appendix“ on page 57).
The transverse thrust tunnel is a part of the ship's outer skin and is delivered
with an anticorrosive coating.
In the propeller area the transverse thrust tunnel is reinforced with a ring of
stainless steel in order to avoid damages to the tunnel and the coating due to
cavitation.
3.2 Gearbox
The gearbox transmits the power from the prime mover to the propeller via
shafts.
The gearbox is installed in the motor foundation. Two support plates support the
gearbox additionally against the transverse thrust tunnel wall (exception BU10).
The gearbox consists of:
– Drive shaft
– Propeller shaft with installed propeller
– Cog wheel pairs
The cog wheels of the gearbox have cyclo-palloid gearing.
– Sealings on drive and propeller shafts
In the gearbox propeller shaft sealings and drive shaft sealings are applied.
These radial sealings are sea water resistant and oil proof.
– Inspection hole cap
On the gearbox housing there is an inspection hole cap. Through this open-
ing cog wheels, bearings and shafts of the gearbox can be inspected.
FK0001AC01.fm
20 Me Version V2.3
3.3 Propeller
The propeller is connected to the propeller shaft of the gearbox by an oil-press
assembly.
The propeller is made of sea water proof marine bronze.
The propeller is designed to function in both directions.
Version V2.3 Me 21
Layout and Function
3.6 Coupling
The coupling transmits the torque from the main shaft of the prime mover to the
drive shaft of the gearbox. A coupling spider absorbs the arising torsion vibra-
tions.
Cavitation occurs when the transverse thruster is operated. The active noise
reduction reduces cavitation and hence the noise. For this a compressor blows
air into the transverse thrust tunnel via an injector system.
For technical reasons a follow-up time is programmed depending on the type of
the compressor motor. The control for this is integrated in the control system of
the transverse thruster system and is not contained in the scope of supply sup-
plied by Jastram.

6.3 Commissioning
Loss of warranty
If the commissioning is not carried out correctly or the commissioning protocol is
not sent to Jastram warranty may be invalidated.
Preparation
General:
Check whether all safety directives are known and adhered to.
Inform the master and the chief engineer about the commissioning.
Check whether the ship is fastened adequately to the pier. If necessary
appoint a rope sentry.
Check whether the distance between the pier and the ship is sufficient.
Check, whether the depth of the water and the draft are sufficient for the
operation of the transverse thruster.
Make sure that no ropes can be sucked in close to the transverse thrust tun-
nel.
Make sure that the transverse thruster cannot be started started without the
IB0001AC01.fm
permission of the commissioning staff.
Arrange the schedule for the commissioning with all persons concerned.
36 Me Version V2.3
Check that enough power is available for operation with 100 % revolutions.
Check the lubrication oil system:
Check whether all oil pipes are rising and arranged and connected correctly
(see chapter 5.6 „Installing the Lubrication Oil System“ on page 28).
Check whether the oil level gauge is filled up to three centimetres below the
top edge of the oil level gauge.
Check that all valves are set to operation position (see chapter 5.9 „Setting
the Lubrication Oil System for Operation“ on page 33).
Check whether the lubrication oil system is completely bled (see chapter 5.8
„Bleeding the Lubrication Oil System“ on page 33).
Check whether the electric oil level control is functional.
Check propeller and gearbox:
Check whether fouling has formed on the propeller. Fouling on the propeller
increases the power consumption.
Turn the coupling four times and check whether it is turning freely. It must
not resist, neither should it have too much play.
Commissioning
1. Inform the master about the commissioning.
2. Switch on the transverse thruster.
3. Check whether the direction indicator corresponds to the actual direction.
4. Check whether the thrust can be felt.
5. Measure the reroute time between full power heading starboard to full power
heading portside and vice versa, and check, whether the times correspond
to the defaults in the following table. The reroute time is the time between
switching off the prime mover from full power portside to switching on full
power starboard or vice versa. The reroute time depends on the power of the
prime mover.

7 Operation
Danger of accident
Unmonitored operation of the transverse thruster may lead to accidents. The
transverse thruster must never operate unobserved.
Remain at the operating panels during operation of the transverse thruster.
Version V2.3 Me 39
Operation
Maximum thrust is reached during standstill in standing water. With a rising cur-
rent or rising speed of the ship the thrust diminishes.
When switching from 100% portside to 100% starboard or vice versa a time lag
will occur. This time lag is necessary in order to avoid an overload of the on-
board power supply, the prime mover and the mechanical systems.
Operation
Refer to the documentation from the supplier of the drive and control system
for details regarding the operation of the transverse thruster. Jastram only
delivers the mechanical components of the system without the drive and
control system.
7.4 Failures
The electric oil level control is connected to the alarm system of the trans-
verse thruster system. Refer to supplier documentation of the control system
to find out how the alarm for an insufficient oil level is indicated.
Failures caused by propellers that are not rotating or rotating insufficiently
can only be remedied by divers or by docking if they originate from mechani-
cal causes in the transverse thrust tunnel (see chapter 10.4 „Repairs“ on
page 54).
In case of failures in the drive and control system refer to the documentation
from the respective supplier.
Refer to supplier documentation of the control system to find out how the
alarm for the compressor is indicated.

Gearbox damage due to low oil
When the valves are not set to operation positions during regular operation of
the transverse thruster system, the gearbox is not supplied with a sufficient
amount of oil. The gearbox will be destroyed.
After maintenance work set the valves back to normal operation position
(see chapter 5.9 „Setting the Lubrication Oil System for Operation“ on
page 33).
The oil can only be changed via the oil drain screw of the gearbox when the ship
is docked.
1. Open the oil tank valve.
2. Set discharge valve to "operation".
3. Set the filling valve to "operation".
4. Open the oil drain screw at the bottom of the gearbox.
5. Let out the oil.
