Studio/OB/EFP Camera Family fyelt) F —— oe = ~ Hf ls . ire 4 act 4 c s Interactive i ISR Status y ey 4 — Feng * ‘The BVP-5001550 is a totally new STUDIO/OB/EFP camera family —specifically designed to address the majority of needs within the broadcast television station, sports and entertainment trucks, corporate and independent production facilities, This camera family is a central underpinning within a larger, more comprehensive STUDIOIOBIEFP camera strategy — namely, total camera hierarchy addressing all strata of a growing international television marketplace. This hierarchy encompasses a variety of forms of advanced television. The very latest developments fiom Sony’ unceasing pursuit of excellence in CCD imaging, contemporary DSP video processing, wideband component triaxial communication to the CCU, and a new high-speed degital command and contral system — all converge in the BVP-500 Studio/OB systems, and their companion portable BVP-55O systems, to bring new meaning to the word “value-added.” ‘A Unified Gamera Family: ‘The broadeaster/preduction studio and outside-broadeast camera imarkerplace has, over the past two decades, separated into distinct tiers which are distinguished from each other according to Performance/Features/ Facilities and, of course — Costs, Within a broadcast television station there can exist a distinet separation in needs: a high performance and fully- featured camera system to support program production — and pethaps a ‘more modest and cost-effective camera system for news origination, There are many variations on this, ‘Yet, within that broadeast station or OB production truck a high degree of system compatibility beeween these different tiers of camera can bring, overall efficiencies and streamlining to both technical supervision and creative ‘operations. A unified multi-tiered ‘camera family has much to offer in meeting different needs within the same ‘overall complex. Sony gave'a high priority to the development of such a coordinated and carefully tered camera family that would allow all aspects of television programming to be optimally addressed. A Three-Tier Studio/OB Hierarchy: Three Levels were identified from careful studies of program origination in television broadcast stations, outside broadcast mobile facilities, and independent studio production facilities. These are: “The Very Best” performance — coupled with maximum flexibility in ‘operational creative controls, The very best that technology can allow — with no compromises. “Very Good” in performance — supported by modest flexibility in operational control. A general “work-horse” system providing consistency. “Good Enough” in performance — combined ‘with simplicity in operational control. Costffectiveness — and a doste for “value-added” — fora trully economical investment, A Universal System Architecture: ‘Taking all Seudio/OB syscem ‘considerations into account our studies yielded an appronch thac promised high Alexibiicy in structuring a tiered hierarchy — a coordinated camera family that would squarely addeess all television program orgination needs well into the next decade. ‘The heart of the family lay in the development ofa system architecture structured about a highly contemporary high-speed digital data command system. This isa very Aexible and Figure 1. A range of creative video operational panels operate over this digital nevwork control and provide picture consistency regardless of the specific camera being utilized, This is of particular advantage in the larger ‘broadcast or production complex {mobile truck system) utilizing different tiers of the camera family. TThe eore system that defined the overall system architecture is centered about the high-end system BVP-700 and its companion production portable BVP-750. An upper and lower satellite camera system are added to this core system: one, a High Definition Broadeast studio camera family — and second, a quite separate, integrated family — the new BVP-500/550 Studio/Portable systems ‘The High Definition Future THE CAMERA -HEAD——— INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY — DSP Video Processing, The goal of camera manufacturers is to simplify the very complex electronics ‘of the modern studio camera chain by, first, implementing the RGB video processing entirely in the digital domain, and secondly, milizing the posers of ‘contemporary digital semiconductor technology to reduce this digital procesing to «4 relatively few Large Scale Integrated (LSD chips. Aud, indeed, such Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology has already made its first appearance in professional video cameras. DSP processing made ts debut in Sony’s self contained one-piece camcorders jin 1994 with the BYW-D600 Betacam-SP and its companion DVW-700 Digital Betacam system — the Digital 1000 camcorder series. The technology employed is very contemporary — being largely of 0.5 nm lithography and high- speed lower-power CMOS semiconductor. A quantifiable improvement in mobile picture acquisition is widely acknowledged by the many users of the Digital 1000 camcorders. Now this same DSP technology is applied to the BVP-500/5S0 SiudiolOB camera family. DSP TECHNOLOGY High Rellability and ‘Stability 10 bit/36MMz Full Digital ‘The digital camera cieuits also Signal Processing The BVP-500/550 incorporates full digital Sgnal processing for the camera provide high reliability and stabiley in picture reproduction, since the setup parameters can not be changed by physical factors such as temperatute, seo tem which prvi ny ee superb picture quality, but also significant advantages for setup of the Faith Reproduction ‘camera ata level unattainable with Handling a wide variery of setup conventional analog signal processing, parameters with digital numerical Superlative Picture quality _Y#!istallows these numbers be ‘The BVP-500/550 uses 10-bit A/D converters for RGB output signals of the CCDs to obtain a wide dynamic range and superior picture quality. While incapable of doing justice to che requirements of the entire studio camera chain, Sony nevertheless saw that present DSP could sil offer a sigaificane conti co structuring an ‘extended studiofOB camera family of unusually high performance and cost- effectiveness —see Figure 1 INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY — Integrated Imaging Capsule The sophistication of today’s program production needs is such that studio and hand-held portable cameras need to be effectively “transparent” to the production control room — both in terms of an ‘ As outlined below, no less than seven separate camera configurations ae possible — by customer choice of the appropriate Integrated Imaging Capsule. Thac is, the imaging “hear” absolute match in pictures, and video operational control. In 1994 Sony of tye camea head — the self introduced a totally new top-of-the-line studio camera family — the contained assembly that forms the BVP-700 studio/OB system and its portable campanion BVP-750. Now this novel concept has been extended in anovber direction. By combining a new range of integrated Imaging Capsules within the new BVP-500 studio camera head and BVP-550 portable camera — a totally new family has been created which admirably addresses the two marker tier camera hierarchy. For today’s 4:3, 525-Line television system this high pixel array ensures very high resolution —and an equivalency in picture sharpness among all camera levels. Je Memory Cars INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY — Wideband Triax Transmission System Triax communication between the camera head and the remote CCU has become the norm in modern television production studio systems. Such systems employ modest lengths of triax cable and seek to deliver at the CCU ‘outputs the full performance capability of the camera bead. On the other hand, major sporting and entertainment events regularly call for extended runs of the triaxial cables — and seek as high a performance as possible at the CCUs mounted in the mobile trucks. To meet all of these needs Sony has developed a totally new wideband component triax system. The system ‘maintains ous philosophy of transmitting a wideband luminance signal and ‘two separate color difference components video signals from head to CCU. Wideband Component Triax Transmission ‘The crix cransmission system has # 1OMEz bandwidth for the luminance Long Range Triax ‘The wideband component sriax transmission operates up to: + 2000 meters (6600 feet or almost 1.2 miles) of o14.5mm cable (Fujikura) *+ 1500 meters ( 4950 feet oF almost which ensures a limiting resulution at the CCU output of 850 TVLiph, The ‘ovo color difference signals (R-Y/B-Y) 0.9 mile) of o13.2mm cable (Mohawk or Belden) + 1000 meters (3300 feet or almost 0.6 mile) of o8.5mm cable (Mohawk or Belden) have a transmission bandwideh of 6MH2. This component system transmission syscem fully proteets the integrity of the matrixed luminance signal (no differencial RGB delays to affect luminance resolution or the alias reduction by the CCD precision spatial offées). This method also transmits the full Luminance MTF of the wider band 16:9 signal — when a widescreen camera is utilized, Adjustabe contr of balance A Common Wideband Triax System All ofthe new 525-line studio and portable camera heads utilize the same wideband trax ystem — and a common type of Camera Control Unit the CCU-700 isa very powerful system concept which see Figure 6. This allows camera heads of deffeent levels to be substituted whenever rapid reconfiguration for a special program production is requited — or in the event of an emergency. It also fuciltares an easy upgrade path ifa camera system of higher performance is sought at a later date (only the camera head need be 001750 —or an Integrated Imaging Capsule in changed if upgrading to a BVP. the case of change between the two levels of BVP-500/550), OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY— Creative Pictrure-Making Camera Operator A totally new ergonomic design recognizes the major contribution of the ‘camera operator to creative piture making, Fasy mobility and comfort in camera handling were a high design priority. The new streamlined design dramatically lowers the viewfinder loser to the optical axis of the camera while also allowing easy operator viewing of the scene itself The viewfinder is a high-resolution 7-inch that can be easily manipulated in position (elevation, tile and swivel) with minimum disturbance to the camera itself. Picture-in picture Facility allows the operator to view any one of 4 return videos within the main camera viewfinder picture (with selection of 4 spatial positions for this picture). Video Operator ‘A powerful microcomputer controlled automatic setup system rapidly aligns che camera chain co a specified reference norm. The reference can be that programmed by the factory (an alignment condition that ensures the camera meets its published performance specifications) — or it ean bere programmed to an alternative alignment that suits the caste ofthe video operator and/or the technical suppor staff. This customized reference can then be stored as the primary reference file vo which the auto setup system aligns the camera everytime that function is activated. That reference file can also be stored in a plugin memory card and used at anytime to program the alignment of other cameras wichin the system. The BVP-500/550 system exploits the flexibility and stability of the DSP video processing, in combination with the new high-speed digital remore control systems, to facilitate unprecedented creative control over the camera’s imagery: Recognizing the diversity in operational philosophies surrounding video operator control within @ wide range of production studios and OB mobile trucks — a range of three different Remote Conteol Panels (RCPS) is available, from a relatively simple panel providing the most basic of emote control functions to fall featured pane! chat includes RGB Color Balance Differential control over RGB white balance, black balance and ‘gamma tracking.
