Question Paper - Final - CE G617

This document appears to be a final exam for a structural engineering course. It contains 5 questions related to structural analysis: 1) Determining displacements and reaction forces for a system of 5 springs. 2) Calculating properties like deflection and moment for a beam on an elastic foundation. 3) Finding stresses in a frame punch press section. 4) Deriving the stiffness matrix for a cantilever shear wall element. 5) Using a flexibility matrix method to find reactions and moments at supports.

CE G617 - Final Exam Birla Institute of Technology and Science-Pilani, Full Marks: 90

Hyderabad Campus
Time: 3 hours Name:_____________________

1. A system of five springs is connected as shown in the figure to the right. All the spring
constants ki are in the current application equal to k. Furthermore, D1 = D4 = 0, F3 = 0 and
F2 = P. Determine the displacements and reaction forces. 10

2. Consider a beam on elastic foundation with free ends. The geometrical dimensions,
mechanical properties and loadings are shown in the following figure. E of material of
the beam is 3×107 kN/m2 and k0=50000 kN/m2 /m. Units – kN, m. Compute:

a) Winkler’s constant for the foundation is, k. 2

b) Central deflection 12
c) Maximum moment 12
d) Maximum shear 12

3. A frame punch press is shown in the following figure. Find the stress in inner and outer
surface at section A-B the frame if F = 5000N. 18

4. Derive the stiffness matrix for a cantilever shear wall element where the fixed node has
two degrees of freedom (axial deformation is restricted) 10

Note: If you are using the beam flexibility elements, show the derivation for at least one fundamental case.

5. Use flexibility matrix method to find the reactions and bending moments at the supports.
Show the derivations for the flexibility elements.
