Assignment4 PDF

This document outlines 9 problems for Assignment 4 in quantum mechanics. The problems cover calculating angular momentum operators, finding expectation values of angular momentum operators for different particle states, determining probabilities and expectation values for different angular momentum measurements, representing operators as matrices and verifying commutation relations, and solving the Schrodinger equation for particles in different central potentials to find energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.

2. Determine the proportionality constants 𝑐𝑙,𝑚 and 𝑐𝑙,𝑚 for the raising and lowering operations:
+ −
𝐿+ |𝑙, 𝑚⟩ = 𝑐𝑙,𝑚 |𝑙, 𝑚 + 1⟩ and 𝐿− |𝑙, 𝑚⟩ = 𝑐𝑙,𝑚 |𝑙, 𝑚 − 1⟩.

3. A particle is in a state with angular momentum z-component 𝑚ℏ and square total angular
momentum 𝑙(𝑙 + 1)ℏ2 . (a) Show that <Lx> = <Ly> = 0. (b) Show that <Lx2> = <Ly2>= (𝑙(𝑙 + 1)ℏ2 −
𝑚2 ℏ2 )/2 . (c) Find 〈𝐿𝑥 𝐿𝑦 + 𝐿𝑦 𝐿𝑥 〉/2.

4. A particle is in an angular state 𝜓(𝜃, 𝜙) = √4𝜋 sin 𝜙 sin 𝜃. (a) What values of L = |L| and 𝐿𝑧 can
be measured and with what probabilities? (b) Find <Lx> and <Ly>.

5. A particle is in an angular state |𝑙, 𝑚⟩. A measurement is made of 𝐿𝑧′ where the 𝑧 ′ - axis is at an
angle 𝛼 with the z-axis. Calculate 〈𝐿𝑧′ 〉 and 〈𝐿2𝑧′ 〉.

6. Show that in matrix representation, the operators AB and A+B obey matrix rules of multiplication
and addition.

7. A particle of mass m moves in the potential 𝑉(𝑥) = 𝐴𝑥 2 + 𝐵𝑥 + 𝐶, with A>0. Find the energy
eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Hint: complete the square on the expression for V.

8. Find the bound state energy levels for a particle of mass 𝜇 moving in the central potential 𝑉(𝑟) =
𝐴 𝐵
− + . Hint: The term with coefficient B has the same radial dependence as the centrifugal
𝑟 𝑟2
potential.

9. Find matrix representations for 𝑎, 𝑎+ , 𝑥 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝 in the simple harmonic oscillator basis. Verify that
as a matrix commutator, [𝑥, 𝑝] = 𝑖ℏ.
