Unit 2: Second Activity – To specify a Purpose for Research and collect Data
1. The purpose of your research: Teaching and learning of reference languages as
foreign languages

First paragraph: The purpose of this research is to observe the challenges that the
people are facing when they are learning and teaching English especially in
communication skills

Second paragraph:

Through this research we are going to discover what strategies the people use when
they are learning and teaching English in order to improve the communication skills

2. Research questions:
You must write two (2) research questions, i.e.:

First question: what are the obstacles people challenge to improve their English-
speaking ability? There are many issues that the people are having but the most
popular obstacles are

• The difference of assents


• Lack of vocabulary
• Organize your ideas in English
• Think of grammatical structures to answer correctly.
• Lack of confident
• The measure of saying other words and saying something else that is not what we
think
• Feeling intimidated by the other person's level of English
• Misinterpret messages
• The use of idioms, phrasal verb, and expressions.
• to have bad pronunciation

Also there is something important in all of this issues and is about organize our ideas in
English , this happen because non-English are always thinking and Spanish , gramma and
how to organize all the words in our main and finally deliver the massage . it is so
stressful manage this situation because there are long names that the order change.
and others.

Second question: what methods or techniques people use to improve their speaking
skills as their second language English?

Most of the surveys said

 practice speaking English with friends


 Read books
 Listen to audios to improve pronunciation
 Create a glossary of words
 Practice every day
 To lose the fear
 Trust myself
 Recording your voice

The practice is one of the most important role there but also the surveys said that
reading books is a good way to improve speaking skill because they can get more focus
on comprehension than in grama and also when you listen the audio and are more likely
to get good pronunciation and avoid misunderstanding.

The other good strategy is making exercises recording the voice It is helpful because you
can listen and look out what are you doing wrong

3. Collecting Data
You must design one survey with ten (10) questions and their options respectively, all in
full English, i.e.:

1. Do you communicate in English? Yes ____ No ____ Why

The surveys said yes because the majority are English teachers, others live in a foreign
country for which they need to communicate in English to speak with the people
around them at work and study

2. In which form do you communicate? Oral ____ Written ____ Why

The surveys said that they use both skills due to their profession and work, but writing
for those people who only learn the language for their own interest use the skill of
writing more since it is easier for them and they achieve effective communication
3.Do you consider oral communication important? Yes ____ No ____ Why

They consider it important because it helps them express their ideas in an open,
comfortable way where they have the possibility of being face to face with the other
person, in addition to that through signs and body language they can have a better idea
of what the other person is expressing or vice versa

4. What strategies do you use in oral communication?

• Make questions
• Ask for repetition
• Use examples
• Listen to songs, lectures to improve pronunciation
• Corporate language

5. What elements are required to express yourself effectively in oral form?

 Being in comfortable environments


 Talk slow
 Have native English speaker friends
 Have a glossary of expressions
 Not be under pressure
 Feeling safe in your English

6. Do you speak with other people in English? Yes ____ No ____ Why

They all answered yes because they have friends from other countries and do a cultural
exchange of languages as well as to socialize with the other areas of interest, the
teachers also speak with the students at the time of the classes

Most respondents said describe, narrate, and present

Narrate: because they like to read and believe that recounting what happened to them
is more entertaining

Describe: why his vocabulary extended more in this area of adjectives, nouns, nouns,
etc.

To present: because as teachers they like to give instructions on the topic, they are
going to present

10. Would you participate in a speaking program oriented to improve your oral
production? Yes ____ No ____ Why

They all said that yes because they can improve their communication skills, everything
that serves to improve will be well received, these programs have many practice
exercises which help them improve their level of English

Conclusion
When you get the challenge of learning English or teaching English , people go through
many issues because sadly our country is not multicultural and you don’t have a lot of
opportunities to improve your English especially in speaking because you don’t find
people which you can speak. Our learning is focus on gramma and vocabulary but no in
comprehension or speaking
beside that some people go to overside and find out the way to improve their skills. This
research helps as to get some advices that people use in order to improve their speaking
English skills. This is a long journey that require time and strategies that work for them
and that can help you. There are many but is up to you see what can help you and take
some of this recommendations and practice
