Narrative of Theory of Treatment Your Name Johns Hopkins University

This document outlines the required sections for a narrative of a theory of treatment, including a population of interest statement, needs assessment, and treatment theory. The treatment theory section should describe the key components of the intervention, the expected mechanisms and short-term outcomes, and longer-term desired outcomes. It concludes with a request to replace the provided diagram with the student's own theory of treatment figure specifying the key components, short-term outcomes, intermediate outcomes, and long-term outcomes of their proposed intervention.

Narrative of Theory of Treatment

Your POP Statement should be the first paragraph (3-4 sentences). This should clearly

state your POP with research citation. End with your key factors.

Your second paragraph (4-5 sentences) should detail your needs assessment including

your key factors examined, a short statement of the methods used, and your key findings. It

should end with a sentence or two introducing your intervention.

Treatment Theory (This section is to be 1.5-2 pages maximum)

Key components. Here you should “define the treatment in terms of what are presumed

to be the specific effective ingredients. Formulate a concept of strength of treatment and specify

the range within which the planned treatment is likely to lie and the minimal regimen or

operationalization necessary to deliver that treatment at effective strength” (Leviton & Lipsey,

2007, p. 58). Basically, what were the key elements of your intervention you included in your

figure and why – provide references. Make sure to reference your ToT figure (found after your

references). The “key components” section should be about 1/3 a page.

Key mechanisms. Here you should “describe the mechanisms by which the planned

treatment is supposed to have its effects. Specify any variables that are expected to mediate the

effects of the treatment and the sequence of steps expected to occur between initial application of

the treatment and the occurrence of its effects” (Leviton & Lipsey, 2007, p. 58). Basically,

explain your short-term outcomes and provide research support for why you expect these. This is

the “black box” connecting they key elements of your intervention to your main outcomes. Make

sure to reference your ToT figure. This should be about 1/3 a page.

Outcomes. Here you should “define the desired outcomes as precisely as possible.

Specify the minimal magnitudes of effects thought to be interesting, the maximal magnitude
3

thought to be likely, and the timing with which such effects are expected to occur” (Leviton &

Lipsey, 2007, p. 58). Basically, describe your main outcomes with research on why you expect

these outcomes given your intervention and short/medium term outcomes. These might be more

long-term and not measured in your study, but the point of doing your study (teacher attrition,

math grades, attendance, ….). Make sure to reference your ToT figure. This should be about 1/3-

a page.

included here and the author names are spelled correctly.

Replace the diagram below with your Theory of Treatment. You should have Key components, short term, intermediate, and long-

term outcomes specified in the figure.
