Zero Conditional: Present Simple

The document discusses the zero conditional, which is used to describe events that are always true or factual. The zero conditional uses two simple present verbs, with one in the "if clause" and one in the "main clause". It is formed by using "If + present simple verb" in one clause and "present simple verb" in the other clause. Examples are provided to illustrate situations that will always occur, such as "if you heat ice, it melts" or "if students miss an exam, the professor fails them". The order of the clauses can be reversed. Several exercises are also provided to practice forming zero conditional sentences.

Zero conditional

We can make a zero conditional sentence with two present simple verbs (one in the 'if
clause' and one in the 'main clause'). This conditional is used when the result will always
happen. So, if water reaches 100 degrees, it always boils. It's a fact. I'm talking in general,
not about one particular situation. The result of the 'if clause' is always the main clause.
Zero conditional is easy to form because all the verbs are in present tense. You just use
two clauses, one with If + simple present verb and the other with another simple present
verb:

If+ Present Simple, …. Present Simple.

For example:

 If you freeze water, it turns into ice.
 And, if you heat water at 100 degrees, it boils.
 If students miss an exam, the professor fails them.

You can reverse the order of the clauses. If the “if” clause comes first, a comma is usually
used. If the “if” clause comes second, there is no need for a comma.

For example:

 The professor fails students if they miss an exam.

 I get tired if I work too much.
 If people eat too much, they get fat.
 If you touch a fire, you get burned.
 People die if they don't eat.
 You get water if you mix hydrogen and oxygen.
 Snakes bite if they are scared
 If babies are hungry, they cry

The zero conditional is used for actual facts, scientific events, things which are always
true.

For example:

 If you heat ice, it melts.
 If you cross an international date line, the time changes.
 And, if public transport is efficient, people stop using their cars.
 If my wife has a cold, I usually catch it.
