Chapter 7 Linear Inequalities

The document summarizes key concepts about linear inequalities: - It introduces inequality symbols like <, >, ≤, ≥ and uses them to represent inequalities on a number line. - It defines keywords used in linear inequalities like "at least", "at most", "not less than", "not more than", and uses them to write inequalities. - It covers properties of inequalities like transitive and converse properties and gives examples. - It explains how to solve linear inequalities in one variable and gives examples of solving single and simultaneous linear inequalities.

Chapter 7: Linear Inequalities

< less than < less than or equal to

> greater than > greater than or equal to

Try this:

(a) 2 5 (b) 2 -2 (c) -5 -10

1. Represent each of the following inequalities by using a number line.

(a) x > -1 (e) -1 < x < 3

(b) x > -1 (f ) -1 < x < 3

(c) x < 2 (g) -1 < x < 3

(d) x < 2 (h) -1 < x < 3

2. Understand the keywords and write the inequalities.

The value of x is at least 4. The value of x is at most 4.

The value of x is not less than 4. The value of x is not more than 4.

The minimum value of x is 4. The maximum value of x is 4.

The value of x is more than 4. The value of x is less than 4.

Transitive property
If a < b < c, then a < c

If 1 < 2 < 3, then 1 < 3

Converse property
if a < b, then b > a

if 1 < 3, then 3 > 1

7.2 Linear Inequalities in One Variable

Solve the following linear inequalities.

(a) x +¿ 3 > 4 (b) x – 4 > 5

x
(c) 3x < 6 (d) <5
2

x
(e) -2x > 6 (f) <2
−3

(g) –x < -2 (h) –x > 3

Solve each of the following inequalities.

(a) 6x – 5 < 7 (b) 3 – 2x > 9

2 54−5 x
(c) 3(x+1) > 4(3+1) (d) <
3 6

Solve each of the following simultaneous inequalities.

(a) 5 – x < 4 and 2x -1 < 13

x
(b) 2x + 3 < 7 and 3 – <5
2

(c) 2(x – 3) < 8 and 4 – (x+ 2) < 3

(d) 5 < 2x + 1 < 13

3x
2. List all the integer values of x which satisfy both the inequalities 2x + 1 > 17 and < 18.
