Appendix 1: Lesson Plan (Template)

The lesson plan is for a math class on multiplication using arrays. The lesson will focus on solving word problems about arrays by writing matching sentences. Students may be confused between addition and multiplication, so visual aids will be used to help explain repeated addition modeling. The lesson will include an introduction reviewing prior knowledge of arrays, modeling challenge questions, and a video. Students will then discuss and solve array word problems, describing arrays with drawings. The lesson will conclude with a quiz to assess learning.

& Time Facilitate student discussion about the word problems in the Power Point. These can be thought
of as missing factor. Many of the problems have a supporting image that can be uncovered to
support discussion. All quotients will be whole numbers. Prompt students to describe or, if
needed, draw an array or diagram to match the picture. Look for efficient strategies for solving,
such as using known facts or skip counting sequences. Ask students to write a corresponding
multiplication equation, using a symbol for the unknown.
